Carrying Around the House

My house has 6 Glock 9mm's spread around, along with my CC S&W shield, and a a scattergun sleeps under the bed. There's an old 1911 in my toolbox in the garage, and a Glock 23 in the works shed out back. My jeep, truck, and mrs FL-NC's car all have 9mm Glocks that live in them. So, I don't need to carry a gun on me in the house if I don't want to.

Jerry David did something just like that. A 19 year old broke into his work shed and stole a .22 caliber handgun out of it on January 4th. He broke into two other people's homes and shot them on January 9th and 13th. Then on the 16th he returned to Jerry's house, shot Jerry's wife in the mud room and then shot Jerry who was sitting on his bed getting dressed. Then he stole the other guns around Jerry's house. He was caught because he pawned an Elk's ring with the man's initials on it the next day.

I only pocket carry at home. Anything else is too uncomfortable for me, especially since I typically end up doing things like crawling under vehicles and playing around with the kids on the floor. Sometimes it's an LCP in a desantis nemisis, more often it's a NAA .22 revolver in a desantis nemisis.

I usually carry a larger revolver outside the house with an LCR as backup. The LCR slips comfortably in a pocket holster pocket of my housecoat, pajamas, or the kangaroo pouch of a hoodie, depending on what I'm wearing at home.

A kydex paddle type holster is probably the simplest solution. Something like a Fobus or blackhawk.
I like the idea of an paddle holster for at-home carry. Stay away from Fobus paddles, though, they are cheap construction and the holster breaks off from the paddle too easily. :(

Bianchi IWB for SP101 snub appendix carry very comfortable and stays put or Galco pancake OWB for the P226 also comfortable. An untucked shirt hides Sig in the Galco well in case I have to answer the door and don't want freak out the pizza delivery guy. Usually it's the snub IWB around the house though. IMG_1749.JPG

True, but if it's just for "in the house use" and not any "serious" activity, it will be ok. I have one that I have had for years for my Glock 23. That gun and holster only gets used at the range a couple times a year, and as a sidearm when hog hunting.

Pants on gun on.. Pants off, within reach.

i carry at home all the time, i have both iwb and owb holsters but prefer owb at home. when i am in the yard, on the roof or just about anywhere around i use a owb holster 99% of the time at home. i use either my desantis dual carry 2 with thumb break or a homemade holster that i did that has a strap to secure the gun. a gun never leaves my side whether at home or away anymore, only places i don't carry in are schools, justice centers and post office. but my gun goes back on as soon as i get back in my car.

Most of the time when I'm in the house I'm in my drawers, unless we have company. If I'm out on the property I'm carrying.

That said though, this is the sort of thing is why I keep outdoor dogs. I don't want them bite anyone, just let me know we have visitors. I will take care of it from there. Of course, I live in the country so we don't get random folks knocking on the door.

Looking for ideas...

When you carry around the house do you use your "normal" outdoor holster? Or something else?

When I'm going out I do an IWB attached to my belt, but I'm looking for something for more relaxed wear - especially for days when I won't be carrying CC outside.

Something that is easy to slip on and off would be greatly preferred (my current IWB is great for carrying, but rather awkward to don and remove).

Concealment is not required, though the option to easily cover the holster would be nice.

Normal carry is a S&W M&P 40 (full size), and that's what I'd be looking to carry around the house as well.

Edit to add: I've tried a clip-on OWB, but looking for better ideas if they're out there. Also just generally curious about how folks carry in different situations.

OP. It is what YOU are comfortable carrying t

I'm in the 'pants on, gun on' crowd. Live upstairs and diligently lock my doors. My EDC is my HD piece and it's always close at hand.

Just me and the missus at home these days. We have a very good wireless alarm system along with a rather light sleeping dog. I have several guns in lock boxes on all three levels of the house and pocket carry either a S&W Model 638 or a KelTec P3AT in DeSantis holsters.

Been carrying an LCR in a Fobus paddle daily since they came out. 5 years, maybe? No trouble.

Most of the time I carry around the house when I'm trying out a new holster before I leave the house with it. I want to make sure it conceals well, is comfortable and retains the gun securely while I do my normal inside and outside chores. I'll often wear a holster for a week before I leave my home with it on. Right now it's a Vedder IWB light tuck for my new Sheild. It has an adjustable cant(up to 30 degrees), three height settings, extremely light and comfortable for appendix carry. I think I finally nailed it the first time with this one.

My holster, iwb stealthgear I believe, is comfortable that I don’t take it off until I go to bed. There’s always the chance that I might be going back out, so I don’t want to have to bother switching again. Watching tv, horsing around with the kids, whatever, it’s generally on me. I have taken off occasionally while wrestling with the kids, put it on a high shelf in the same room, but then it goes right back on.

But, you need to do whatever is comfortable for you.
