Three friends and I drove from SE Illinois to Pall Mall, Tennessee and participated in the 27th annual Alvin York Memorial shoot.
The shoot is held on the York farm which is now part of the Tennessee state parks. Not only is it on the York farm, but also had one of Alvin York's grandsons and a great-grandson competing in the competition. The great-grandson shot a great score, and finished in the top 15(iirc).

The match consists of 10 targets fired from prone position, rifle rested on a 'chunk'.
The signs placed between the shooting positions are known as "flashers". They are to keep from burning your neighbor with the flash from your flintlocks.

Targets are posted one at a time at a distance of 60yds.(visible in above pic)
Open, fixed sights only. Sights may be shaded but no peeps or apperature.
The top competitors are shooting long, heavy, dedicated chunk guns. The stocks are made with a built in rest near the muzzle. 20190322_192038.jpg
This beautiful rifle sports both a shader and a rest. They are heavy. One man claimed his rifle weighs 124lbs.

In this match, its customary to use a sighter target. And slip your actual official scoring target in behind your group. If you look closely you can see my target inside the folder.

My best shot of the day. 20190323_191905.jpg the score is the distance from the center of the x to the center of the hole. A perfect example of an x is .00 and called a 'spider'. There were many '.0something' shots.
Your overall score is the sum of the distance from the x for all ten shots. The winners were shooting totals in the 5inch range. Scores in the 9inch range were still in the top 30 of over 150 shooters.
My score was 11.85. Probably about the middle of the pack. 20190323_192024.jpg
My score wasn't good enough to win any prizes....so I treated myself to a used target model Pietta Remington '58 that I found for sale by an individual at the shoot. ($180 used, but supposedly accurized?)

Classy shoot, if you had to wear a sportcoat. ;) Nice '58, the sights ought to make it accurate. Like the rifle in the 2nd and 3rd posts-a lot like the Sniper rifles used in the Civil War (except for Berdan's unit, of course.)

The sportcoat/overalls are encouraged but not required. There are prizes and recognitions for authentic costumes.

That looks like so much fun. (Maybe not for the prone position shooting. Getting up from the ground these days is more of a challenge than shooting a good score.) :D

Thanks for all the photos.
Jeff
It is definitely an issue for the older gents. One man down the line from me required assistance every time, but he was determined to complete the match, and did.

Well you were right down the road from me. Had my situation been different I intended to go, but such was not my luck. Nice score on the Remington.
