The 2 I have left don’t get shot enough. Well today I spotted this beautiful 29-3 in my favorite gun shop and broke my promise. Sine I didn’t have an 8 3/8” Barrel and the Combat Grips were so beautiful, I just couldn’t help myself. The nickel is flawless. Looks like it has only been fired a few times. I will cure that this weekend. It’s pretty enough to just look at, but as I’ve said many times before, if I can afford to own it then I can afford to shoot it

I also do not shoot 44 Magnums like I used to, the hands, wrists, and elbows will let me know.
But they are easy to shoot loaded with 44 Specials.
Beautiful gun by the way.

WOW! That is a beauty! I can only imagine how nice that is going to be with some 44 special +p style loads in that long barrel. I am very jealous.

Well I can see that little ol' promise didn't last that long! Still I can see why you couldn't walk away from this beauty (I'm a sucker for nickel plated handguns as well)!

Had I seen that pretty thing calling to me from the display, I'm afraid I'd would have done the same.

Congratulations! Range report please.

With looks like that, the siren wouldn’t have to sing too loud to me to buy it either. :)

A real beaut!

Stay safe!

Nice find.

Most of what I shoot out of a 44 Magnum these days is about a hot 44 Special level load in a 44 Magnum case. Pleasant to shoot.

If I want wrist snapping recoil, I'll drag out the 460 S&W Magnum.

In 38 caliber, I shoot mostly 38 Special level loads these days and I enjoy shooting light 45 caliber loads with wadcutter bullets.

I keep what I buy figuring I'll never find a replacement down the road if I want it again. This particularly applies to S&W revolvers.

Holy Crap! Now that's a barrel!

For a long time, I could not embrace a 8-3/8" barrel. It just seem too long. A few years ago I bought a S&W Model 25-5 (45 Colt) with a 8-3/8" barrel to fill out my collection of Model 25-5's and I began to embrace the longer barrel S&W revolvers. I've obtained a few more since then including a 22 RF (Model 17), 357 Magnum (Model 686), 38 Special (Model 14), 41 Magnum (Model 57), 44 Magnum (Model 29), and a 460 XVR (460 S&W Magnum). They are fun to bring out every once and a while.

I was the same way for a long time. In my mind all I could think about is how barrel heavy it would be. Well, it is, but you don't shoot 8 3/8 offhand very much anyway. Its a bench gun for me anyway. My first 8 3/8" that was shot very much was my 686. I was looking for a .357 for hunting and wanted to wring all of the velocity out of my reloads I could. I fell in love with the length. With open sights, the longer sight radius helps way more than I thought. And the longer barrel makes it more stable for me anyway. Now the guns I shoot mostly at my range are my 686, Mod 27, and Mod 14 all in 8 3/8". I also have Mod 686 that I had my gunsmith fit a 7" Performance Center barrel on and it gets a lot of time as well. Now I've grown to love the look of the long barrels and think they just look right.

Yes it is. In the year 2000 Camfour Distributors placed a special order with S&W to have 300 629-5 .44 magnum revolvers made in this configuration. 2 1/2" barrels and fixed sights. These 300 are pre-lock S&W's. They came with Hogue rubber grips.

I'm not sure but some may have been made after 2000 that have the internal lock...key hole on outside. o_O

Other side with much more practical Ahrends grips.
