Thinking about picking up a S&W 642 or 442. I know that several years ago, there was a lot of complaining about the finishes on these guns being fragile, particularly with the 642 clear coat peeling off.

Can anyone comment on recent production examples? Have they changed finish methods? Do either of them hold up markedly better than the other?

Generally speaking they're not particularly resistant to some powerful solvents. Or some abrasives.

A basic CLP or similar is all you really need for the frame. Save the tough stuff for the cylinder which is generally stainless steel.

Thanks. My go-to cleaner is Break-Free, so that shouldn't be an issue. I'm thinking maybe the 442 would be better- the black rear notch with an orange painted front sight will be easier to pick up than with a silver rear notch.

Kydex on a crossbreed holster wore right through anywhere that it touched the gun on my 2015 442. I don’t mind, as it’s a workhorse carry gun and has some character now. I stay away from kydex now.

I have a 642 that I bought in the 1990s. So far, the finish has remained in good condition but I'll admit the gun does not see heavy carry use. It has been shot enough over the years that I needed to replace the springs a couple years ago.

For cleaning, I use Hoppes #9, Ed's Red, and/or CLP. They do a reasonably good job of cleaning without disturbing the finish.

I also have a 442 but it does not get shot or cleaned very much. The 442 came machined for moon clips. I liked the mood clip option so much that I had the 642 machined for moon clips. But, that is a different subject.

Disclaimer: my specimens are circa 2005/2006 revolvers. But, my 637 and 642 both display the "peeling" finish issue. I've used a ton of Hoppe's #9 on them, and I suspect it's the culprit, because the only other stuff I've used on 'em is Breakfree CLP, which is typically benign as far as affecting finish. My 442 has been babied, and doesn't have any problems with the finish.

My 5 year old 638 still looks fine.

As does my 8 year old Model 638. I use a little bit of Hoppes No.9 to clean it and wipe it down with a silicone cloth. I carry it in a DeSantis SOF-TUCK holster.

I have owned a 642-2, a 642-1 and a 638-3 and all are more than 5 years old (the 642-2 now belongs to my son) and there is no more of a finish problem than a blued pistol. Kydex will wear any pistol. Any holster will cause "holster wear" and left unattended to sweat will damage even stainless steel. I guess some of the early 642's and 638's did have some issue with the clear coat peeling b ut I think they changed it.

Ended up with a 642, they were on sale for $360 at the local gun shop. Being a veteran, I think I qualify for the $30 S&W rebate also, so not too bad of a deal.
