A Very Informative Article(s) RE: 6.5mm vs. 270 in the Hunting Fields.

Good unbiased material there. I have both a 6.5 swede and a .270, no Creedmoor though. I prefer the 6.5 swede because of the rifles it is chambered in. The 94,96, and the m38 rifles are truly great weapons, even by todays standards.

Takeaway, no matter what you shoot, know your weapon well, and choose the load appropriate for the job. Next let's do full caliber discussions, 6.5 vs .277 all the way around, 6.5 Grendel vs spc, 6.5cm/swede/.260/x284 vs .270 win and prc/win mag/leopard/26 nosler vs 270wsm. I'm willing to bet the only thing we'll find is what we already know, but it could be a nice change of pace.

I had read the article about the Swede, but not the 270. The article about the 270 was interesting. I had no idea that ammunition suppliers upgraded their products after 9/11. I read the Swede article again and will be giving the Barnes TTSX a try.

I’ve been to the Ballistics Studies site several times in the past, but not for some time. Thanks for the reminder Garandimal.

I have 3 centerfire hunting rifles , two 336 Marlin both 30-30 and a Remington M783 in 270 winchester ..

But I must say the 6.5 Creed is interesting... Id like to maybe one day buy one and experiment with Hornady 160gr RN

Psha! Anything bigger than a .224 90 gr is overkill in North America! You sir simply WANT the thump on both ends! ;)

90gr? Jeez we're talking about hunting not fighting off packs of grizzly bears. Game animals only get so dead you know...

Thanks for pointing out that the .270 Win article wasn't referenced.

OP has been edited to rectify that.

I’ve read a fair number of Terminal Research Ballistics articles. For some reason I expect their writing to be objective, but it has always come across as subjective to me so I don’t read their stuff anymore.

Statements such as this in the 6.5x55 article, “With factory ammunition, performance is generally in the same class as the .30-30.” cause me to question the veracity of their work. I would much prefer Hornady SST Superformance 140 grain 6.5x55 over any 30-30 ammo for 250 yard shots at deer.

I own a 6.5x55 and a .270.

Are you familiar w/ past offerings of 6.5x55mm factory ammo?

That was their point.

And a correct one.

The new Hornady offerings may be better.

Being that I own and shoot a 6.5x55 and have for some time, I’m familiar with past and present factory offerings. I would not equate even past factory offerings with 30-30 unless it is at ranges under 175 yards. Then I’d give the nod to 30-30.

That's kind of been my take on the site as well.

Well...

6.5x55mm/140 gr. Rem. Core-Lokt: MV=2550/ ME=2021
.30-30 150 gr. Rem Core-Lokt: MV=2390/ ME=1827

Their comment was an observation - on how they killed game, comparatively.
