Modified barrel for trap?

Why wouldn't it be?

If it fits you well and it shoots where you want it to, it will do just fine. Now, if you plan on down the road shooting serious competition, you'll move up to more specific for the task at hand.

I use a trap full as marked by Winchester in the 70s. 8s in a medium quality of a shell works for me. win aa shells hold a tighter pattern further out in my other gun that is a field gun marked mod. some shooters nail them closer to the house than I do.
...so any way shooting style and ammo vary a choke results differently. (shoot the gun, lol.)

Gil and Vicki Ash have been in the shotgun coaching business for over forty years. They did an outstanding experiment on chokes and loads and patterns. The picture above represents patterns tested (and they did thousands of shots and counted all of the holes). You can see where the Modified choke has the a more consistent pattern over distance than even the full - that is the main killing core represented by the colored plates - with the last plates at the back representing distances of 40 and up.
Just switching to a quality shell can improve a modified pattern by a lot.

As long as you're not on the 'back fence' (27 yd line) it should work, though I recommend Full past 22 yds. As George P. mentions, quality shells make the difference. I recommend AA Super handicap or Nitro 27 for yardage, and STS and AA Light Target for 16 yards.

Should be fine back to about 23 yards or so. Further if you are a quick shooter.
I agree. My "trap gun" is a 28-inch barrel w/mod choke. It works fine for the closer stations (Ive even won a couple of beginner competitions w/it) but at the furthest stations things are not so good. HOWEVER I strongly suspect that the increase in misses is not attributable to the gun. I have hunted geese & ducks with my shotgun & have done as well as anyone else around me. Bottom line, I think you should be in good shape w/what you have for now.

What @kudu said.
Truth be known....a modified choke is probably beneficial from 16yds to 23 yds.
Does anyone remember the Herb Orr choke?
I have a friend who had his wife's TC done by Herb. He got the "27" yard job done and she had a fit. He could do anything with his lathe and did a couple for several of us . I picked up a Target marked barrel recently that looks like Herbs work but no markings like he put on them.

I shoot full for all yardages but my 1975 TB came that way. Ink spots are fun and you can't get sloppy. When recovering from back surgery in '12 I used an 1100 with a modified barrel and saw no deterioration in my average. I normally shoot Gun Club 8 for 16-20 and reloads with magnum grade 7 1/2 from 21 back. We are at 25 in league and it works there
I'm not afraid of mod back to 25 but I like i.m. better.

Lots of guys I know shot what is called a light modified in their P, and K guns and do all right. Not tight enough for me.
