Leaving Gun in Car

There is no cure for stupid and that is the epitome of stupidity. Given today's litigious society, she/ you are leaving yourselves open to a catastrophic lawsuit if pistol is stolen.

You beat me to it. If she should be sued by a victim or victim's family that was shot or killed by someone who stole her unsecure gun, it is going to impact the husband just as much. It's his money/property/ future earnigs also that would be put in jeopardy. If my wife acted like that I would take the gun and lock it up. If she didn't like it there are divorce lawyers all over the place. I'm not going to allow my life to be ruined by a juvenile attitude.

You could link her some articles talking about how often crime guns are obtained from car theft and ask her if she feels comfortable knowing she could be arming someone that could commit some heinous crime. Do it tactfully of course. Perhaps she isn’t aware just how irresponsible her inadequate storage method is?

I recently read an article about local police in my area asking people not to leave guns in cars for this very reason. A quick google search should bring up lots of info on this subject.

Ask her if she would leave $250 cash in view? Ask her if she would feel any responsibility if the stolen gun was used in a crime? IMO there is no reason to leave a firearm or anything of value in easy view of a thief.

Wives are great, but a bit stubborn (all the time). Ask if she doesnt mind putting a hand towel over it if nothing else. Would she leave her cell phone laying in plain sight unattended? If not explain the value is likely comparable. Good luck

Id remove the gun without her knowledge and sell it. At least that way a criminal won't get a hold of it. Cause its only a matter of time before your paying for a broken window and a new gun.
And if the person that steals the gun shoots and kills or injures someone, I guarantee that your name will be on list of people being sued in civil court! For negligence!!!

As I read it it's technically your gun. I'd take it back and have a conversation.

If she wants to go legally get her own gun then she's free to do with it as she pleases, legally speaking.

My wife bought her own carry gun and she's heck bent on purse carrying. I'm not a fan but it's her gun.

The most important thing in your scenario is her having a gun that is legally tied to YOU should it be stolen.

I'm not an advocate of irresponsible folks having guns, but at the absolute least they need to do that on their own dime.

I’d have her read this thread.
I did and that was my intention all along. I'd let you all say what I'd get in trouble for saying.

Thanks all. I sent her a link to this thread plus the statistics on vehicle firearm theft as well as stats on where criminals get most of the firearms that are used in crimes. She agreed that it was a bad idea, and said she'd carry it or leave it at home.

harsh.
i see the OP got the answer he was looking for but there are a few posts i just can't help commenting on...
Remove the gun.

Sorry, but this is the responsibility of the person who owns the firearm.....100% of the time.
nonsensical. its HER gun and if it the responsibility of the owner !00% of the time why are you telling him to do it.

i don't see the OP's state or res. but in most states it is completely LEGAL to sell or gift a firearm to someone else. once done, it is legally theirs. yes, the paper trail might lead to you and if quesitoned you would need to ecplain that it was LEGALLY sold/gifted. but technically it is no longer yours.

How would you all deal with a stubborn significant other leaving a firearm you gifted them in their car?

if my wife disreguarded my hints/concerns/warnings i would make her a holster for her cup holder or door panel that at least concealed the pistol and sucured it from getting knocked around... maybe a hollowed out CD case with foam inside and a big SONY label on it... a jumbo holloed out coffee cup perhaps. continuing to press the issue would not in any way improve our relationship nor make her favorably disposed to carry the gun... no matter who won the arguement. i suspect the same would be true for rubbing her nose in my arguements that i drummed up from others' mouths/keyboards in an online forum. a key element of encouraging responsible behavior is letting go and allowing the other party to learn... though we are always ready to help

edit: duh.. just realized ALL coffee cups are hollowed out... :)

So hard to lay a gun on the passenger seat and put a newspaper on top... Nobody knocks windows out of cars for newspapers. Unless they need the lotto numbers....

Get a cable lock and run it through the open cylinder and then lock it to the seat rail. By doing this the gun is protected from the typical smash and grab. It is also what I believe to be the minimum one should do when leaving a revolver in a car.

Did you read the opening post? The gun in question is an M&P Shield.

Sir (and Ma'am)

A VERY unique way to get a point across. I dealt with the boogers for over 30 years. What others have said is 600% true. Perps will walk from car to car, look in quick , leave. Until they find anything of value, smash & grab. They KNOW if they look long enough they'll score.

It is incumbent on us as civilized 2A persons & personettes:) to be as responsible as possible including, at a minimum, placing our treasure out of plain sight while not in use. Live, love, learn & move on:thumbup:

My Wife would either put it away properly or I would take it back. I would tell her this about twice and then it would happen.

I'm not an internet tough guy but I have a very strong sense of what a gun owners responsibility is and hers does not meet them. Every gun owner should take precautions to keep guns off of the street and out of criminals hands. And in my eyes, She is negligent. Also, you have the financial loss of the stolen gun and broken window.

Educating a person is like addiction. They have to want to first. I'm sure he has dropped hits already. From the sound of it she is one of those all knowing better than others. If my wife put me at a legal risk like this I would take it away from her under community property and beg them to revoke her permit. If she ragged me about it she would be single real quick because it would be apparent she does not care about her own legal security nor mine. Noone is worth being with if they seek to endanger.

I'm having a real hard time believing you're even married

Women’s bodies are different then men’s obviously. It leads to difficulty finding a comfortable carry method. Focus on that and the rest will take care of itself.

I was in the Dr.'s office the other day. Ladies were oohing and aahing over a leather purse another little old lady carried. She told them it was her concealed carry purse where she had her pistol. Perhaps getting a cool handbag like that would alleviate leaving pistol laying around.
