I saw a thread on here were someone was asking advice on reloading for conversion cylinders for the '58 Remington copies. Kirst no longer lists 12,000 PSI for the pressure limit, but instead, says to use charges that will give less than 1000 FPS. According to load simulations with Quick Load, this puts the pressure back to SAMMI specs of 14,000 PSI. Most loads for the .45 Colt are around 750-800 FPS anyway.

The biggest problem I've seen loading for this cartridge is that with a lot of the powders, the case is only 30-40% full and you get over flash problems. This gives you some pretty erratic pressures and performance problems, including some hang fires. I had this happen with Bullseye. I've also had it happen in 38-40 loads with a couple of Winchester powders. Because of that, I quit using powders that won't fill the case at least 70% full and I haven't had a single problem since.

Since I've started using QuickLoad, I also started paying attention to powder burn completion. I've found that if I can use a powder that will give at least 95% burn completion by the time it hits the end of the barrel, my accuracy (group size) greatly improves. Choosing the right powder provides a lower peak pressure and flatter gradual slope on pressure drop in the barrel while giving the same or better velocities and apparently, better stability of the bullet. At the very least, it gives more consistent groups.

Would you be ok with using bp and/or subs? I know some people swear by high quality black powder such as old eynsford and swiss giving some of the best accuracy...also black mz if u want it clean burning, low pressure and . Fills the case too. Will also get you into the higher end of the fps youre expecting...you can excede it too from what ive been told. Just throwin it out there.

OMG, load to 1st tier specs and you'll be fine.I don't think there are any loads that are over 1000 fps with 255 gr bullets. Everything else is "equivalent" and I've been loading for years for my Converted Dragoons!
