Local shop has a 39TDS on the shelf. The little fella wants to follow me home, but I think it is badly over priced at $895. What say The High Road?

Must be me that missed something because there are a couple 39TDS rifles on Gunbroker between $1200 and $1500.

It's like Barnum said. Suckers born every day. Some think more is better. I bought my 39B in late 70s. Guy said it wouldn't eject. Gave him $40 then went home and unlocked the ejector rod. Been on the money ever since.
Best place to get one would be an individual and even then some think they can get retail.
I stay away of broker/auction sites unless I'm just looking at something specific for knowledge. Most of my best buys are pawn shops. I frequent several and keep tabs on what they have. The longer they have it the better the deal.
Years back I talked them out of a Taurus 44mag they had forever. Got it for 245.
Got a Taurus 357 from a walmart they found under some shelving almost a year after they quit selling pistols. Stayed safe in the box. 150. Guy gave me the receiver end of an M11 12g with flaming bomb, that had less than a box shot through it for nothing. Bought barrel and forestock. Not bad for a 110 year old shotgun. Still shoot clay with it.
Anyway, the Marlin is good but I think 800+ is way too much. But that's mizer ole me.
If you are just neeing a 22 and not stuck on the marlin same guy that gave me shotgun gave me a Glenfield 550, think made by Remington, 22 simi auto S, L, LR, rifle length that is really acurate. Might keep an eye out. Would definitely cost less.

Eh...I surpassed “needing” to buy a gun many years ago. Now it’s about things I want to add to the collection. The 39TDS was only made for a few years. I picked this one up for $850 because of the collector value.

All things considered, I'd say you did fine. As you say, they didn't make too many of the TDS variety.

I know there are lots of old model 39 variants out there, but production had virtually halted for a few years and will likely never see the numbers of years past. So pricing now reflects that and will only get higher over time.

Congratulations and enjoy!

I think you did well on the purchase. I haven't seen one at that price in quite a while.
On another note, what is a Marlin 39B? I'm familiar with the 39A, 39D, 39M, 39AS...but not the "B".

A bit too high from my budget as well but if you have the money and it's something you really want, then by all means get it and enjoy!

Yeah, but the Colt Python guy has never paid today's prices for a Python...Probably less than half.
I have the same problem. I've watched inflation grow but still think of prices from 20+ years ago as normal.

You have your Pythons, but what would someone who wants one today have to pay for it? Whatever it is, that's the new normal price, whether we like it or not.

Also, when we say we bought something "a few years ago", the reality may be that it was actually 10 years or more.

My dad always called the straight stocked 39s a B model, but apparently that was a dad thing and not a real Marlin thing. Can’t find any info on a 39B ever being produced by Marlin.

That is the low end of today's retail. Look on the Marlin website. The only model 39 you can buy new is a 39a "fancy" with an MSRP of over $3k. I don't think I would sell my 39a if you offered me $895.

Right now Marlin only makes the 39A in their custom shop for a MSRP of $3,195.00. I don't know who they are thinking is their market is for this rifle but its certainly not me and probably not for the majority of shooters. If you read the description the custom rifle it sounds like it would be quite a beauty but too many times marketing hypes things way beyond what ends up being the finished product. About 4 years ago I bought a 39A made in 1979. The metal is very nice but the stock at the pistol grip area has some discoloration and a dull finish probably from sweaty hands holding the rifle. I gave $500 for it then and felt I got a decent deal after checking completed sales prices on-line and in gun shops. It's that capitalist thing, supply and demand.

I bought two 39's last year. A like new early 80s non-cross bolt gun for $525 and really nice mid 60's model for $200.

I gave $600 last year for a pristine 1969 model 39A and thought I got a decent deal on it compared to what I was seeing then. I feel like the $850 I gave for this 39TDS yesterday is money well spent on a rifle that is only going to increase in value. I don’t think I have ever seen a 39 of any variety locally for less than $550.

That is a great rifle, Congratulations! I wanted one of those so bad and almost had one when I was in college. I saw a new one at a chain store and asked the salesman to see it. I guess he thought I was too poor to look at one of those and made a rude comment about only real buyer could handle the firearms. I was so mad I went home to get the cash to buy it, but I got side tracked with a quick surf with my friends. By the time I went back, it was gone.

At this point in my life I would have paid 850 just to right the wrong.

Enjoy your rifle and let us know how it shoots!

I’m pretty happy with ten round groups like this at 50 yards with iron sights and cheap ammo. If I could see better, I’m sure that would tighten up. One of these 39s is probably gonna get a scope. I know, I know...sacrilege and all that... 35DF57AE-36C8-4FD6-9B92-C9F0BA8C44B7.jpeg
