When I received a 500 bullet rebate from the LNL press I purchased, I thought what am I going to do with a bunch of .429 180gr xtp’s? I don’t normally load light for caliber bullets, but gave it a try.

I used the minimum starting load for H110 on hornady’s website, a whopping 29gr!

It near looked like I set off a nuclear bomb indoors.

They run 1570-1610fps

Good thing you didn't set the target on fire!

After the build up and pics, I expected to see only shreaded paper at the target! You sure that 29 gr wasn't for rifle? Whew.....

My WW296 w 180s in .44 mag has been 31.5gr ever since i read Layne Simpsons article in handloader magazine......

Used to have two of us doing that load.....indoor range.....on " Blue Smoke Memorial Fridays". Not a Keith load but cmon.......two guys shooting that crap side by side indoors? FWIW we were never worth a hoot back at work the rest of the day ( shot on lunch hour). Just had stupid grins plastered on our faces and walked around dazed

Note: if not already aware.....such light bullets w ball powders....on .44 magnum.....if using a revolver you will see a bit of topstrap cut. Wasnt on your rig and now it is. Dont worry. It only goes so far. What will happen is accelerated forcing cone wear. Most folks dont shoot the boomers that much. If they do.....then the cost of a new bbl is no big deal.

I think my coworker was at 10k rounds in his old 29. It was spitting crap out the sides before then. Cant remember what it was at when he said it got bad. Screwed on a new bbl..... still shooting it

Concussion w those loads....or blast.....or whatever you want to call it.....indoors is brutal. Esp when you have sinus issues. Buddy said outdoors that load in my 8 3/8 629 was the most annoying .44 he ever shot

If you shoot that load often......indoors esp.......and can shoot it well.....then youve got pretty good focus imho. It is a hoot.....but also nerve rattling

Why is this so with only hot light bullet loads and not hot heavy loaded bullets?

They are fun. You can feel the concussion slap you in the face

I went with a friend in Ohio to an outdoor range near Medina. His 460 Alaska did set the range on fire.
But that doesn’t diminish your impressive display! Good job! Excellent pics!

a lot more powder in the light bullet loads. the "go to" load for my model 29 is Hornady 180gn xtps over a bit more h110 than hookeye uses [we could legally load that much powder back in the day]. the load cuts the top strap but only so far. the blast also put a razor sharp edge on the back of the barrel. the gun still works fine, no issues from the flamethrower loads. the mv out of the six inch barrel is about 1800 fps. the load is very accurate out to a very long way. I have moved on to heavy bullets in my ruger super Blackhawk, but would have no problem going "light" again.
