I shouldn't have walked into the LGS today, but I was driving right past it, went inside to say hello, one thing led to another...

It has holster wear on the side that's showing, but everything else looks good. The trigger is very nice. I have owned many other small snubbies, but this is my first real Smith and Wesson J-frame. It's very light and the grips fit my XXL hands pretty well. I gave $300 plus tax for it, which isn't a fantastic deal, but they did throw in a free holster. It's not one that I'll use, but it will keep it from getting beat up in the gun safe.

Any recommendations for carry holsters, or ammo in general? Carry methods? How good or bad of a deal would this have been in your neck of the woods?

After I've shot a couple hundred rounds through it, it will probably join my LCR and LCPII as one of my "regular" carry handguns. (I have some bigger ones for OWB when the weather is cold, but it's somewhere between warm and scorching hot around here for most of the year.)

I already have two of them and at $300.00 in that condition, I'd buy it. I use a leather pocket holster or a leather pancake holster on my belt. I have many different J-frames and the 642 is one of my favorites. Enjoy your new pistol. tom.

That's a reasonable price for one in very good condition.

I also have a 642-2 and LCR. Although the Smith is slightly heavier than the LCR it's smaller form makes it easier for me in pocket carry. I use an Aholster kydex pocket holster or a Sideguard "minimal snap" leather holster for IWB. Both are very thin.

I settled long ago on the ammo that was designed specifically for the J frame for the NYPD, Speer gold dot +p 135 grain short barrel.

Thanks for the ammo advice in particular. I will get some and try it out. The 642 fits in the back pocket of my jeans very well.

That's not a bad price for a used 642. I've tried IWB carry, but they're so small and light I now prefer to pocket carry a j-frame. I have a Safariland holster that I really like, it's more rigid than the typicaly Desantis Nemesis type holsters, which means it won't stick to the gun when you remove it from your pocket and has an added benefit that it hides the shape of the gun more in your pocket.

Carry mine in a Simply Rugged silver dollar and use Remington's 125 gr SJHP +P. Also think about the Wolff shooters spring kit.

I have carried a 642 for the past 5 years. I carry in the right front pocket in an Uncle Mike's #3 holster. Zero printing.

Thanks for all of the kind comments. Apparently I could have gotten one from GB for as little as $225-$250 if I were very patient, but it would have been sigh unseen and I would have had to pay shipping and FFL, so $300 plus tax wasn't too bad.

I ordered a holster from Amazon and they sent the wrong one. Doh! I will ship it back tomorrow and hope they send the right one next time.

This is my last day of work for a couple of months, so I will take the 642 out to the range early next week and see how it does for me. I shoot snubbies pretty often, so I'm expecting it will be just fine. I'll let y'all know.

George P - Me too. I might get something else later, but I thought I would start out with a good ol' DeSantis like I've used with most of my other snubbies. Too bad they sent me the one that fits the NAA 22 mini revolver instead.
