Sometimes you have to just scratch your head. Guy at work thinks a modern battalion equipped with the the latest in firearms and gear (unlimited resupplies, no air support) could defeat either the Confederate or Union armies as they were equipped at that time.

You're kidding. Modern army: bazillion times better communications, far better weapons, tanks, artillery. Infrared and other night vision devices, 150 years of high tech army battle goodies.

A modern army would prevail over a confederate or union army easy peasy. Add in air power (which would not realistically be with held even in this unrealistic speculation) and modern army prevails.

One modern soldier with a M-4 versus a squad of union/confederate army .... that one guy is toast.

Given the tactics of just lining up in the open and marching toward the enemy I don't think it would take a modern battalion with full auto weapons long to force a surrender. Kinda like only needing 2 bombs to convince Japan that they no longer had a chance.

There's a lot to consider here besides just the size of the two units. If the battalion is fighting using modern tactics as well as weapons, and the Civil War era army is fighting with Civil War tactics, yeah, the battalion is going to chew them apart simply based on fire superiority at range. It's all fun and games until Javelin missiles take out all your artillery and you have to advance through automatic weapons fire. The Civil War army would have to advance through several hundred yards of M249 (or equivelent) belt fed fire before they could even begin to use their weapons.

I'd scratch my head at anyone thinking a civil war era army could defeat a modern battalion of infantry. How do you expect your guys armed with Model 1861s to outgun modern battle rifles?

I'm pretty sure that a modern battalion (with its supply chain, etc) could handily mop up both the Confederate and the Northern Aggressor Armies, at the same time.

Of course, that's assuming the conflict remained substantially conventional; if it didn't, you'd have Afghanistan, or Syria, instead of victory.

I’m sorry but this is off topic for us. There are what if sites that might like this.
