i picked up a ruger birdshead ruger new vaquero with a 3 3/4'' barrel in 45 acp. i bought a a pancake holster for it and i carry it, my other carry is a ruger sr1911 commander in 9mm. does anybody ever carry a cowboy gun?

Sometimes.

Very rarely/occasionally. Mine is a 5.5" and takes a coat to cover.
I do it more as a demonstration (for classes that I teach) that not everything has to be tactical these days.

I use an El Paso threepersons.

Up in the mountains I ride my horse with one and if it is cold, it is "concealed".

I have a 5 1/2" Vaquero in .45 Colt. It's a bit awkward to carry concealed. I do carry it some times while woods walking in a El Paso Saddlery holster with a 2" wide belt. I love the gun although it is somewhat useless.

Yes. 5.5" Ruger, .357. The barrel is covered by the jeans but the grip sticks out. I just cover it with a wool shirt. With some foreward cant it conceals well and doesn't print. I made my own holster for this.

I carry a Ruger .45 Blackhawk. Tennessee does not require concealment but I find it prudent to cover with a jacket or vest. Here in Mike Barranti's No. 1 Shuck which is about my my favorite for speed and comfort:

Here is a similar rig, a .44 Special Ruger Blackhawk (an ex-.357 Magnum Three Screw) in a Graveyard Jack Gunleather holster:

i don't have a problem carrying under a button down shirt in fact it carry's really nice, and yes you need a good belt

regularly carry them. The first is carried everyday.

That Barry King stamp makes a really nice looking border.

I do sometimes. I never thought it was a good idea for all those usual reasons people bring up. Capacity, reload time, having to cock for each shot, etc. But I've been spending enough time with a particular single action at the range that, right now, I'm more comfortable with it than any other gun I own. It is currently familiar to me in such a way as to make shooting it an unconscious process.

Obviously, I could put the same range time into shooting a higher capacity semi-auto, and have the same level of competency with that gun instead. But shooting semi-autos just doesn't interest me all that much, which makes it work. Like going to the gym, or running on a treadmill.

The single action is usually reserved for lower population environments, and often backed up with a pocket pistol. But if I'm going somewhere heavily populated, I'll carry something more appropriate.

I often carry single actions on the farm, and particularly, if I'm in a hurry to get to town to pick up a part before business hours close, I don't bother changing out. A coat works fine in winter, a long shirttail in summer.

The older single actions hold five with one under the hammer empty for safety. My memory may not be what it ought to be, but offhand, I'm not recalling a time when I had to shoot more than five bad guys. There's a good chance that after you popped the first couple, even if the rest of them didn't run away they'd be in such confusion that you might have time to duck behind cover and drop a few more in the cylinder.

Arguments might be made for more modern guns--I've read a few--but if you reach under your coat, and it's a single action, there's no sense in thinking about it then. Fight with what you have.

If I really expected trouble, I'd think long and hard about going to town with anything.

A good thing to do is to step out on any early summer morning and look at the dead bugs under an all night security light. They didn't have enough sense to stay away from the bright lights, and it killed them. People aren't as much smarter as you'd like to hope.

Somebody with a twenty round capacity double stack might read this and smirk "But I can afford to miss." I might miss. You might miss, but nobody can afford to miss because a better shot might be hitting while we're wasting time missing.

I do when fishing, and anywhere else I happen to go afterwards. I carry no extra ammo. I keep a little LCR in my pocket too though. My usual carry is a double action revolver or a 1911 for work.

40-82, I like your last line. I may use it next time someone knocks the "antiquated" 1911 at work.

When i feel that the extra lower warrants the extra weight, i sometimes carry a convertible .357/9mm blackhawk with a 5.5" barrel.

I carry it in a homemade leather holster that hides well under a light jacket. I generally only carry it on woods walks in the fall.

A boring polymer 9mm usually just makes more sense.

I would sometimes carry an old style birdshead Vaquero with heavy loads when walking the dog in PA. I would get home from work after 1am and we had a lot of black bears in the area. Especially in the early spring or when a mother bear with cubs was around.

Sometimes. Only reason I don't do it more often is a matter of convenience, laziness and concealability. A 17oz LC9 is just easier to conceal.

That said, I'm 100% confident in my ability with a single action revolver and believe people put too much faith in capacity, reload speed and the speed with which they can do a mag dump. The difference in platforms for the first six shots is not as significant as people perceive. If I was in law enforcement or the military, I would surely choose something else.

I am a single action shooter. I have considered the very same gun as a ccw.
Carry what you want. Someone will disapprove no matter what you carry.
As for me, I like it.

I've been eyeballing the Ruger single seven birds head In .327 fed, with a 3.75" barrel. Riding in one of these . Not the most practical, but whatever.
