I can see a crossroads in the distance so I’m preparing JIC. Having logged 140 hours of OT at work this month and currently working on another ~100+ hour stint has me pondering a selfish purchase. A little background for clarity: bills are paid, no credit card debt, saving with a double retirement so no other money woes. That first $3500 went toward family obligations like summer vacation being prepaid and a new balcony/deck. The wife and kids got 4 of the last 5 firearms and she bought a new car (I fixed mine up and it runs fine).

Soooo...I was thinking I might give myself a budget of $1,200 to border on DW 1911 territory but could easily stay at $400 used territory and play it safe. Been looking over a year at Sauer 100 rifles, but honestly I have enough of everything from centerfire to rimfire to black rifles to 1911s, cc pistols, and muzzleloaders to last me till the grave.

If it were you though, and the windfall was waiting, what would you choose and why? I know everyone is partial to one thing or another, perfectly fine to say so.

I got into 10mm a while ago, and it's a very versatile caliber. I'm not sure if you reload. I do, and it makes the cost of ammo a non-issue.

Any of those are fine choices.

I'm a big 10mm fan, and I also like 1911's... but I actually don't love them together that much. Yes, the 10mm is a "long action cartridge" that is easy to make run reliably in a 1911. Yes, there are now quite a few 1911's with adequate chamber support to handle the full-bore stuff. Yes, the weight of the 1911 tamps down muzzle rise a bit. BUT. The backstrap on a 1911 is narrow. In my hands, it concentrates the recoil forces on a narrow strip of flesh. I find full-bore 10mm's from a 1911 to be a little tiring, and to require some willpower to avoid the flinch reflex after a couple of magazines. I happen to like 10mm's with a wider backstrap to spread the force, while keeping the weight of a steel frame, and have gravitated to the Tanfoglios for that reason.

Others feel differently, of course.

I voted for the 10mm 1911 for "giggles" - not for hunting though. I already have better tools, including better handguns, for hunting. But a 10mm 1911 has always sounded fun to me.:)

My one and only grail gun is the Blood Work gun.

The one and only lock gun I would consider is a 327 PC with 2” barrel. (The one that look just like a pug dog)

So I chose S&W revolver. $1200 will be a good down payment on the Blood Work gun. It would be more than enough for the 327.

Hi...
I chose the 10mm 1911 option...I shoot my son's pretty regularly and keep considering that I should get one of my own.

Problem is that I would probably end up buying another single action revolver...most likely a Uberti or Cimarron.

Truthfully, the last three guns I have bought are a couple of Sako bolt action rifles and a Contender single shot pistol in .45Colt.

I can have the best of intentions but then something shiny catches my eye and I lose control.

I voted GP100 because everybody should have a 4-inch .357, and I really like Ruger revolvers.

Nice to hear you are in good financial shape! That makes thinking through the options much more fun, doesn't it? I am also thinking about how to spend a nice off-budget windfall, but I am not looking at another firearm. Rather, I am seriously considering springing for an AMP induction annealer. I don't really need it, but I enjoy reloading as much as I enjoy shooting and I would definitely put it to good use lengthening the useful life of my various Ackley cases. $1,200 would about cover it on one of Brownell's 10% off and free shipping sales.

A big bore revolver. And in necessary (if you don't have one already), a reloading bench.

I hadn’t thought much about the backstrap on a 1911 being narrow though I do have good size hands. I know several stock makers who contour a palmswell of sorts (wider at the backstrap) for 1911s that might help. I have a few in .45, just thinking about an RZ-10 or Pointman with ramped barrel.

Also didn’t think about a Contender but have a Pro Hunter muzzleloader with a .300 Win Mag barrel. Of course I reload, and my single lever gun at present is a Henry .357 Mag but also own a single-shot CVA in .44 Mag.

Might be easiest to describe my footprint:

Rifles: .22 S,L,LR, .5.56, .357, .44, 6.5 Creedmoor, 30-06, .300 Win., .50 ML.
Handguns: .22 LR, .22 WMR, 5.56, .380 ACP, 9mm, .40 S&W, .45 ACP
Lots of multiples in there, a fair amount of overlap, but nothing really lacking. I have been zeroed in on revolvers lately, if only because centerfire rifle is not permitted for deer, but there is a handgun season. I tried a dozen rounds from a CVA black powder muzzleloader pistol and it nearly broke my fingers under recoil so I don’t want some odd configuration.

Yeah, I don't find it bothersome with most .45ACP rounds. It's just when you get to the full bore 10mm's that it gets a little touchy for me. It's possible I'm just a wimp.

I’m feeling awfully blessed this month with an extra $5-6k in take home pay that wasn’t expected. Also got word from work last week that I have nearly $650 in checks I didn’t cash last year from my 125 medical plan (my ex probably tore them up) that will be reissued to me. I still don’t know if that’s a sign to have fun, help others, or sit on a another nest egg. For now though I’m loving the suggestions!

I doubt that “wimp” part applies, 10mm through a Glock had me worried that space-age frame was gonna let loose and cartwheel the slide into my face; I’m stocked up enough on ugly as is. I can definitely picture the rigid frame on a 1911 being less forgiving in the hand even with its lower magazine capacity.

Maybe I have too much cousin Eddie or charitably maybe Lucias Clay in me but my first instinct with money I don't think I should have is to find a good place to forget I had it.

Maybe too many stories about the dust bowl in my formative years.

"A used S&W revolver for range fun"

... well, "range fun" among others.

Actually, I did just come into a ~$1500 ... sort of. Recently, it appeared that the transaxle on my 28+ year-old (barely broken-in :)) riding mower had taken a fatal dump, but after some work I determined that it is a clutch collar issue that I am (fairly) confident of being able to correct.

Prior to getting the situation resolved, I did some research on replacement machines and had decided that it was going to cost me ~$1500 ... so ... $1500 saved, right? ... bear with me here, this is true Gun Guy Wanting-To-Buy-A-Gun Logic in action. ;)

That said ... for $1500+ I would expect to be able to acquire *3* vintage S&W and/or Colt revolvers on Gunbroker.

EDIT: OK, this selective, automatic line-thru stuff is quite odd.

Of course, the 10mm world is not limited to Glocks or 1911's!

But, while I have no particular affection for Glocks, I wouldn't worry about one shedding a slide.

Lol looks like it is just the universe trying to keep you honest.

The last time I came into some extra once all bills were paid I was the owner of a 1911. It was not a DW but in my journey I promised that I would buy another 1911 and it would be a DW. So of course that is my recommendation.

If it were me it would like be a DW 1911 or more single actions. I have a want for something with a birdshead grip for no other reason than I like the looks. :) Who says you need a good reason :)

If you're asking me today, out of those choices I'd take the GP100 as a range toy and camping/hunting sidearm. You can run a big range of ammo through them depending on your purpose and they're just nice reliable chunks of steel.
