So my son bought an AK today. It's a hungarian manufactured, milled receiver, early production fixed stock AK, with "∞" infinity-sign on the selector for full auto. Not mint, but in nice shape; some wear on the finish throughout but no nicks or dents anywhere, which leads me to believe it may have not been issued to military/recruits. Police, perhaps, but nobody knows.
It was on consignment at a gun shop so he didn't have a chance to talk to the previous owner.
I only had a few minutes to take a look at it so no pics (yet). I couldn't find any western proof marks on the bolt or barrel, which indicates that it has probably been imported in early 90's after the iron curtain fell and ex-combloc AK:s were a dime a dozen. Machine work on the receiver and fire control group is exceptional, trigger feel is among the best I've ever come across on milspec AK:s. There's a likelihood it has been rebarreled, the barrel protrudes approximately 2" beyond the front sight but the usual 14x1mm left-hand thread is next to the sight, making the installation of a suppressor a bit tricky.
But... I couldn't find much information online what it might actually be. Possibly an AK-55 of some sorts? It has a serial number starting with BM + six digits. Furniture is traditional AK style, apparently wood instead of laminate, and the grip has a very pronounced checkering.
Any information and pointers to resources are welcome, my own AK:s are much newer and I've never really bothered to research the variants of 1950's and 60's.
