How do you pocket carry?

No one has. I’m open to suggestions. Besides, as much as I’d like a new firearm, a new holster would be a little less expensive, if it would work for me.

It's also (IMO) important to know your circumstances, are you carrying in an NPE? Are you just looking for an option when the style of dress you mentioned is required or is that your normal dress and you need a work around? What kind of jeans?

I am not trolling. I honestly want know how you pocket carry.
I pocket carry a Ruger LC9s in a DeSantis Superfly holster in my right front pocket. Its probably about the upper limit for pocket carry, but it works okay for me. I'm usually in dockers, cargo pants, or loose fitting shorts. It will sometimes "print" when I sit, but the Superfly holster has a nondescript square silhouette so it does not look like a gun in your pocket.

Just as an FYI, I usually have my phone in my right front pocket and keys in my left front pocket.
IMO you need to move your phone (assuming you are right handed). I don't think you should have anything in the same pocket as your gun.

I would say 90% of the time shirt is untucked and isn’t an issue for IWB carry. The other 10% shirt is tucked in, whether it’s a polo and jeans for a bit cleaner look, or slacks and button down shirt.

Jeans are Levi’s and wrangler’s. I’ve had both that have decent size pockets, or pockets you can barely get a phone in.

I would certainly try a tuckable IWB with your shield. I like my 1911 IWB at 2 o'clock in a Vedder Light tuck, when I tuck a shirt around it (usually a polo or button down) slight blousing actually makes it conceal better than simply untucked in most cases, but especially with lighter weight polos.

Pocket carry can work for any handgun and you can put the pocket in any place you want, and in many places that are advantageous over belt carry. You can fashion the pocket for the easiest access and the fastest draw of any concealed holster. The only reason to compromise by carrying a gun that you're less effective with is because you haven't made the right pocket to carry it in.

Just curious more than anything else, but do you have any pictures of pockets that you've altered that you could share, and how they look being worn while carrying?

Thigh Carry, Dress Shacks and kilts. Maybe we are on to something in the world of Concealed Carry. Maybe a new trend coming. Something other than tactical pants.

Not gonna mess with my favorite pants! And keep your sticky paws off my Hawaiian shirts. You’re not in my magnum PI episode! :neener::rofl::what:

98% of the time in Florida, its shorts weather. I have about 12 pair of these is several colors

And in the hip pocket goes one of these
20190602_080217.jpg
Usually I throw a mini Bic lighter in the outer pocket to further break up any silhouette that may appear of I'm seated, or squatting...but that's the best system I've found so far. If I'm wearing jeans or slacks, the gun rides in the back pocket

DeSantis nemesis superfly and a S&W M&P 45 shield 2.0. Depending on the jeans or shorts the grip might poke out a tiny amount, but I wear a untucked tshirt. After many tries I love this combo!

40 years ago I started carrying, at first a Colt 1903 then a 1911. I tried a SH but the elastic cut into my shoulder so all the way until the military I carried sans holster in a pocket. After retiring from LE I couldn't stand anything on my hips anymore and went back to exclusively carrying in a pocket (including my LE days of keeping a BUG M-60 in my shirt pocket under my name tag).
Normally I slip an M&P340 in a front pocket and for extra firepower a 640 in either an inside jacket pocket or the opposite front pocket.
Usually some type of soft leather pocket-slipper holster but sometimes just the gun.
In over 30 years, I've yet to do myself harm. Occasionally I will stuff my M9 or Vaquero in my pocket, in Winter I worked security and kept the M9 stuffed in the coat pocket (glove pocket). I personally hate holsters.
Interesting fact, Levi Strauss created the design of the Jean's front pocket specifically for retaining a six shooter.

You must have some big pockets. I pocket carry a LCP in a desantis nemesis, but my Shield goes AIWB when I carry it.

In a pocket not attached to my pants. :)

Why limit yourself to a "little" gun, when you can, in many cases, carry a full, or near full size handgun with a reload?

They currently have a sale going on through 06.21, $10 off with code....HOT10 .... www.smartcarry.com

Ive been using one on a regular basis for about 15 years now. I lead an active/physical lifestyle and regularly carry in NPE's, and have never had a problem. They are the most versatile holsters I have, and if I could only have one, it would be it.

Interested in your experiences in the following areas:

1. How is it to draw from sitting and standing? Do you just leave your waist belt loose enough to just shove your hand down there without unbuckling? Would a hammer gun catch on the way out on the waist band?

2. What does "nature calls" time look like? Do you take it off when sitting on the jon? Does it preclude you from using a urinal (I would assume yes)?

Well, I'm 6'3" weigh 285 and have a 38" waist. Wranglers from Walmart have a pretty generous front pocket. My family can't always tell I'm carrying, but they know I am!

I have pocket carried numerous guns. I now pocket carry a Sig P365 in one of various holsters. I have recently pocket carried a Shield 45. So, obviously I do not wear tight pants but more of a loose/relaxed fit. To be completely honest I also IWB the P365. How I carry as well as what I carry depends on various factors. One size does not fit all. God made us all the same but different. So therefore, YMMV.
The main thing is that you always have your Little Friend with you.

I've never really cared for pocket carry and have only carried that way on the hottest of days wearing cargo shorts and a t-shirt.

The problems that always hit me about pocket carry are:

1) The monkey-fist-trap problem, which leads to
2) Slow draw times, which lead to
3) The tendency to use small guns firing less-than-"service calibers", which leads to
4) Short sight radii and small grips which make getting shots on target more challenging.
5) The challenge of finding a pocket holster that breaks up the gun's outline and will actually stay in the pocket on EVERY draw.

These guys seem to have actually developed products that overcome these problems without violating fashion mores. I may try out a pair of the khakis, the mag sock, and the thin holster, just to see if they really work.

Sorry, I dont have notifications on. Im just now seeing this.

#1... If Im standing, just slip my hand down behind the front of my pants, just right of my belt buckle and onto the grip of the gun. Sitting, I just lean back slightly and do the same.

I dont cinch my belt up tight, but its not loose either. I wear my normal (correct) size pants, and they pretty much stay up without a belt, so its not too much of a problem if its not tight.

I suppose the hammer could be an issue if you weren't paying attention. The only gun Ive used with mine that had one, was my SIG P239. Its been a few years since I used it, but I really dont remember it being an issue.

#2.... Sitting, I leave it on and just pull it up above my waist. Its up out of the way and not going anywhere.

Standing, it depends on where I am. If Im home, or in a Porta Potty, etc, I find its easier to just open my pants and flip the hoster up. Its just faster and easier, and it also lets me readjust my shirt if I need to. Im pretty active at work during the day, and thats often something that needs done, and thats the perfect time to do it.

If Im at a urinal somewhere in public, and people are around, I just try to push it aside the best I can, and get on with it. Its not as comfortable or easy as flipping it up, but its still pretty easy to do. You could always just use a stall too, if its to much aggravation for you. My pants (Carhartts/Dickie Carpenter jeans) are somewhat "fitted" in the front and the material is fairly heavy and doesnt give much. Something like dress trousers, or something with a looser/lighter material, would probably be easier here.

Theres no doubt its a bit different than most are used to and might seem a bit awkward and/or strange to use, but familiarity comes pretty quick, and its usefulness, and comfort, quickly become apparent. I think youll quickly find, you dont need to downsize your gun too much if you have to go uncovered and/or look a little more presentable at public functions or work. Works well too if youre wearing a tucked in tee shirt and are covered in dirt and mud, and the sun is burning your hide off. :)

If you go to YouTube and look up Smart Carry, there are a number of videos and reviews. Might give you a better idea.

Normally I carry a KAHR PM45 in a Desantis Super Fly, front right pocket. Occasionally, with pants with smaller pockets or when I care a about being discrete I’ll carry a LCP in the crappy holster it came in, also front right pocket.

You really dont know what you dont know. ;)

I was very skeptical of them when I first saw them and thought there was no way that it could work. Once I actually tried it and began wearing one on a daily basis, I quickly saw the light.

I started with a Seecamp, then a J frame 642, and soon realized, a Glock 26 would easily go in the same spot, with a 17 reload. Ive even carried a Glock 19 or SIG P239 sized gun on one, with the right pants. For me, the 26 is the sweet spot.

Standing, sitting, squatting, running, climbing, jumping in and out of things, etc, and you forget you even have it on. I work in a harsh, active environment doing physical work, and this is the first holster I dont have to constantly keep hard after both the gun and holster on a daily basis. The gun sees very little if any dust and dirt, or even dust bunnies. The holster is waterproof against your body and even protects the gun when your pants are soaked with sweat. It protects your gun from you and your environment, and you from your gun, better than any holster Ive used that was in or on my belt.

The biggest advantage it has over pocket carry is, you can still get to the gun quickly and easily, even while seated, and with little effort and no struggle. And on top of all that, I can still carry a realistic gun in it with a reload.

This is very interesting. I had not heard about these before. Current carry gun is a Sig 365. Looks like it would be about the perfect size for this holster.

Correct me if I am wrong, but for all the ney-sayers who talk about shooting your junk off or your femoral artery; it looks like the videos on YouTube that the end of the barrel is below your junk and centered between your legs. Looks like a pretty safe way to carry.

I have not previously heard of or bought those products, but that is a good example of a simple modification to a pocket to make it work for drawing. With pocket carry, a pocket should be dedicated to the handgun and not also used for car keys or something else. So a tear-away side to the pocket using snaps or velcro could help. It can also be important to have a way to retain the holster in the pocket.

I would not buy specialty clothing to acquire a feature like that, but I would modify my clothes. Currently, I sew my trousers with as many as four modifications, but none of them are for a gun. The problems you list can be overcome other ways.

1) You can solve the fist-trap problem by having the grips protrude out of the pocket. This requires a second cover garment like a shirt for concealment, but so does every belt holster whether it's IWB or OWB.
2) With the protruding grip a pocket holster allows for quick aquisition of a full firing grip, and it is lower than a high-ride waist or IWB holster. Only a drop-leg race holster is faster.
3) If you allow for the grip to protrude, anything but gigantic novelty handguns will work from the pocket.
4) If you extend the pocket, the barrel and sight radius can be as long as your leg, but is most practical if it ends above the kneecap. Full size 1911's and 6" revolvers can fit many popular trouser pockets without extending them.
5) I make my holsters in leather with the rough side out. The holster and pocket have to be matched. The holster does not come out without a great deal of effort. An undersize holster that drops into a much larger pocket won't be retained. To match the pocket perfectly does not require a custom-made holster, but if you do not make the holster match the pocket perfectly, you must sew the pocket to match the holster. Put the holster in the pocket, position it properly, and sew the pocket tight around it. I don't sew it in permanently because leather does not launder well. But it won't come out unintentionally.
