With so many departments and agencies having onerous, draconian, or even downright silly rules about duty sidearms, what would you carry if given free reign to purchase and carry your own patrol pistol and backup gun?

For me it would be a .45 P220 for its moderate weight, knockdown power, reliability, ergonomic controls and pointability, and a P238 for backup.:)

I've carried my Glock 35 on my right hip and my G27 in various places over the years. Honestly, I have played with backup carry so much that if I needed it, there were days I might have to frisk myself. Then there's the matter of the M4 & the shotgun in the trunk...

I favor the FN pistols. I am really digging the 509. I have been testing out the Midsize for a few weeks, but if it I needed it for true duty carry I would opt for the full size to carry 17+1 on board. I typically carry a pocket 380 as my primary. However, if my lifestyle required a back up gun, I think I would go with something with more punch like a small single stack 9mm like the Ruger LC9S/EC9S.

Then again, I'm a big fan of the 320. Might make sense to go with a full size 320 in 9mm. From there a 365 would offer similar trigger feel to my duty gun. The 320 also has factory 21 round mags available if I wanted to carry more than 17+1.

I personally like (insert whatever duty size gun) and a lightweight snub as a backup.

Yeah I know it’s old school but I think it’s still relevant.

So for me my choice would be the boring ol G19 with +2 and the uncommon pre lock 342 PD as the BUG.

For years the MI State Police issued a Sig P22x .40 duty weapon and a Smith 640 .357 as the backup.

All depends on what kind of duty. Uniform, with a duty belt, is one thing, if you're wearing a suit concealability is paramount. I carried a Glock 26 and a Beretta pocket .22.

LCP's came out just before I retired, I would have carried one of those instead of the .22.

I used to have a Beretta "jetfire" 950 in 25acp in my pocket.
My off duty is a Glock 26. Solid choice imo and the only really small 9mm in the 1990's & still solid choice today

In uniform I was comfortable with a S&W Model 19 on my belt and a S&W 3913 under my shirt attached to the straps of my vest.

Today, I would prefer a S&W M22-4 on my belt and a Dan Wesson CCO on my vest straps. Both in 45 ACP.

All conventional restrictions off? First on my wishlist would be a better caliber and a lighter trigger.. I’d want a double stack 10mm ...( perhaps a custom built 2011 if someone else is getting the bill) or at least a tuned g20 or xdm with a 3lb trigger.

Backup gun would be a s&w 340/360pd

I'm also not allowed to have a backup weapon but in the spirit of the thread. I think I'd have to pick my Glock 19 as a primary and my Glock 26 as a back up.

Good classic combo. G19 mags working in the G26 is a huge plus for obvious reasons. Many folks never think or care to bring a reload for their backup gun and this combo makes it downright easy.

I'd want an all steel double stack 10mm as my primary, so probably a Tanfoglio Elite Stock III, or one of the variants for primary, and a Glock 29, or if SA ever comes out with a 3.8 double stack XDm in 10mm for backup.
