I have built most of the ar's I want, but a 7.62x39 hasn't happened yet. My bro in law gave me a ton of ak mags when he sold his Wasr, and I have been contemplating a KS-47 from psa.

First question, do the magwells hold up to the use of steel mags? Or are these a poly mag only proposition?

Second question, has anyone found cycling issues with short barrels? I go back and forth between the KS and just building a x39 8.5" upper for my ar SBR...

They are great. They're on sale for 499 right now. I bought one couple of months ago and it is better than any of my other aks.
I use a Korean 25 round steel mag in mine. Works great.

Cycling will not be an issue with the eight and half inch AR in the Russian round as long as it has a pistol length gas tube which it will.

I like mine. I've only had it about 2 weeks but it's been good so far :). I got one of the blems but like most people I'm completely unable to find any blemish on it. I'm pretty sure the ones marked "blem" are just a way to have a sale on them without lowering the overall perceived value of the regular price.

I've also got an AR chambered in 7.62x39. It has also worked fine but from my understanding the width of the case head on that round makes the locking lugs narrow enough that there's question as to long term durability. When Colt built some AR's in 7.62x39 for a military contract IIRC they used a modified AR-10 upper rather than an AR-15.

adcoch1: Do you plan to shoot in excess of 2,000 rds. with it?

If so, maybe you know the quality and durability of steel (cold hammer forged?) used to manufacture the barrel, bolt, bolt carrier, trunnions.
I have no idea what PSA uses, but am curious. They often know quite a bit at the "gritty" AK website. and opinions there might not be 'family-friendly' (made for Girl Scouts), but we learn lots from those guys.

Truthfully I probably would not run a ton of ammo through it. But I could see 5k rounds maybe. The days of mag dumps are behind me, but I have 4 kids and the two oldest love shooting, so maybe more. I prefer to have a lot of different guns to shoot so as to not wear them out too soon. A bolt or a barrel is pretty easy to replace though, so it shouldn't matter too much on round count, I am mostly concerned with how the aluminium receiver holds up to steel mags...

I dd a review of the KS47 a few month ago. Steel mags are no problem, as all mag locking points in the gun are steel.

Thanks Rangegod, I thought I had seen that writup somewhere but the search function on a phone is kinda problematic. Your pistol is right in line with what I am thinking about. I have fallen in love with short barreled ars since I built my sbr and last pistol. They are so much fun. I didn't know that the front mag catch was steel on the KS 47, guess that eliminates my concern! Time to come up with some spare $$ now...
