is the stainless worth the $40 more price tag? does it shoot as good as the blue barrel. i am shooting a 2003 model blued with simmons scope that was set when the gun was purchased new. the scope is still set and drops animals fast, but i was wanting to get another as my son turns 8 this year and i want to pass the old one down as it was my dads till his stroke and he gave it back to me. the blueing is nearly gone from the old one but it is still a tack driver just like it was new as i keep my guns clean. so if you were getting a marlin model 60 would you go blue or stainless? thanks for any help.

I prefer the stainless, they shoot just as well. Nothing wrong with blued, but I happily pay more for stainless.

Between the number of shots you will take with it, your son will take with it, and his progeny will take with it, that $40 isn’t even on the radar.

And it's subject to rust. While stainless can rust in extreme circumstances, it's pretty much good forever. My last few purchases have been stainless, i.e., a stainless Mini-14 and a S&W Model 64.

I'd pay the extra money not to open a case and find rust has occurred.

Given a choice I would go with the blued rifle. They shoot the same and I have several stainless rifles as well as hand guns but I am more drawn to blued steel and wood.

I figure it this way. A good rifle is about like a good truck or motorcycle. We tend to get an extension of our personal taste. Doesn't matter what I like since it's not going to be my rifle. Go with whatever suits your taste. :)

I weigh it this way... Marlin 60’s last a long, long time, and they beg for use. As the OP has experienced, bluing does wear with time and use, and a blued rifle with compromised bluing will rust. Stainless might rust under the right conditions as well, but consider the difference in repair method required; rust on a blued rifle can’t be polished away without further compromising the bluing, while rust can be buffed/sanded/polished on a stainless firearm, leaving it with a “like new” appearance.

Easy math, for me.
