Hi, New member here with a question regarding a 3-screw Ruger Blackhawk .30 carbine that I traded for on Saturday. I'm pretty sure it has been modified, but I'm not that familiar with Rugers. My revolver has dragoon style grip frame and a vent rib. The grip frame is just a hair oversized all around, and there is some rounding of the edges where it meets the rear of the receiver, so it is pretty obviously a replacement part. The vent rib, on the other hand, is so well done, that it looks like it could have been factory. The question is, did Ruger put vent ribs on any of the 3-screw models?

I don't think Ruger made any ventilated barrel ribs for their Blackhawk revolvers. A company called Polychoke use to make a vent rib that you could glue on to your Ruger. Try Googling "Polychoke vent ribs", click on "Images", and see if they look anything like what you have on your gun.

Sounds like your revolver was customized somewhere along the way.
I never saw any but Plain Jane Blackhawks of that era.
Perhaps the Super Blackhawk grip frame of the 3 screw era fitted Blackhawks as well, and this one was swapped.
Maybe the vent rib is a well-done gunsmith-fitted aftermarket part.

Ya, other than shotguns (like my Red Label) I cant recall Ruger making any other guns with ventilated ribs...although some rifles (No1 for example) had quarter ribs for scope mounts.

I certainly don’t know about every Ruger made so could be wrong though...

Welcome Rod! I'd only be guessing about whether or not Ruger ever put vent ribs on any of their Blackhawks. But like others have said - I'd like pictures if for nothing else than another gun for me to drool over.:D
But I can say the SA Ruger 30 carbine is the loudest handgun I ever fired .
My 14" 7mm IHMSA wins the prize for the loudest handgun I've ever fired. But the 7.5" 30 carbine Blackhawk I used to have comes in second in the LOUD category. As a matter of fact, the 30 carbine Blackhawk I had is probably the handgun I used to destroy most of my hearing. When I owned it, I was young, dumb, and if I used "hearing protection" at all, it was just a couple of red wire nuts (Scotch Locks) stuck in my ears.
It was a lot of fun though, and I once drilled a coyote through the ribs with it at about 80 yards.:)

Jeezus that must’ve hurt shooting that gun without ear cover! Those .30 Carbine Blackhawks are “high-pitched-crack!!!” ear busters for sure.

I’ve had 14.5” M-4’s fired over my shoulders (in an entry stack) that rattled my teeth and kissed my cheeks with blast, but I had the ears covered. I’ll admit without ears on I would’ve probably fainted. About the worst I’ve done is shotgunning after doves as a teen without covers....looking back, I’ll certainly never do that again!

Stay safe.

I remember back in the day that someone made a add on vent rib for the blackhawks. about 1982 or so I purchased a 357 bhawk when I was 16. well actually my dad purchased it. when I was 15 I told him I wanted a 357. he was like yeah, ok just save up the money.

when I had the money saved up he was like whoa Nellie! he never thought I would save the money. after I gently reminded him of what he had said he went ahead and got it. I dnot think my dad ever went back on his word in his whole life.

I got a set of pachmayer grips for it rite away and wanted the vent rib but never did go thru with getting one.

I put a poly choke rib on my 70s 357 BK. I recently removed it none the worse for wear. It was held on with a black adhesive.
