While the esthetics seem a bit crude by modern lights, it is really cleverly designed, and when taken down you can see it heading in the direction of the later PP series. The barrel covering extension on the front of the slide was apparently purely to avoid having to buy larger milling machines. CnRsenal has a great vid on them.

Mine feeds fairly well, though it has a tendency to drop the magazine sometimes.

When I got it, the disconnector spring was broken- good thing I disassembled and checked it out before attempting to fire it!

Getting the slide off is more of an art than a science, lol. Not a bad gun, but somewhat crude compared to some of its contemporaries such as the 1910/14 Mauser or the Brownings.:D

Everybody's early designs look crude compated to Browning. His guns appear as if they were created in finished form like Athena springing from the forehead of Zeus.
 
Towards the EOL for the Model 4 the trigger bar was placed internally. Whether that was purely cosmetic or related to protecting it from dirt and mud is an open question.
