The Sphinx 2000 was an extremely well made pistol. In fact, it ranks firmly at #4 on my list of top five highest quality semi autos built since WWII. I've got both a blued and palladium plated S models, as well as a blued Competitor. The frames are all stainless.

These are jewel-like from a quality perspective. The attention to detail is flawless, the fitting is very tight and precise, and the finish is something to behold. Even the roll markings are otherworldly in their precision. These were built in the 1990's for a short time before Sphinx went under. I applaud a company for trying to build the best of the best, but doing it profitably over time is another story. Manufacturing costs were very high. I'm glad Sphinx gave it a run at least.

They are by far the finest iteration of the CZ 75 design, in my opinion.

Any Sphinx 2000 fans here?

I wanted a Sphinx S-2000 the first time I saw one in a LGS. The price scared me off at the time, but later on I've never had the cash available when one pops up someplace once in a while.

They are a work of art. I only have a AT 380 DAO that I picked up years ago at a pawn shop. A Swiss watch!

Beautiful (and beautifully made), pistols! Can't recall ever coming across one in person but enjoyed reading about them in the various gun magazines. Your excellent photos remind me a lot of the photo spreads American Handgunner and Guns Magazine use to have featured with their articles.

Thanks much for sharing!

What is your top 5 list? Definitely interested especially with the vast collection of awesome firearms.

#1 Sig P210 (only the forged Swiss models from the mid 60's on. Not the later Swiss or German models and certainly NOT the American version)

#2 Korriphila HSP701

#5 Beretta Steel I

I've read (and re-read) enough of your posts that I could probably have guessed all of them, with the exception of number 5. I'm kind of surprised to see that you ranked it above the SIG Sauer Mastershop pistols. I will have to see if I can find one. I wonder how the Steel I compares to the Centennial, as that one really caught my eye.

I'd love to hear your impressions of shooting the forged, heavy frame P210. I have several forged Swiss P210s and concur with your ranking it number 1, but I doubt I will ever have the opportunity to own or shoot a forged, heavy frame P210 (or a Korriphila for that matter), so I am curious how it compares. I know you have said that SIG really put their best effort into those pistols so I am sure that makes a difference, but does the heavy frame itself add much to the shooting experience?

This is probably my favorite 9mm P210 and thus my favorite pistol:

There is something special about a P210-6 in 7.65 Para though:

Rio,
I put a lot of thought into my list and in the end chose the Steel I over the Mastershop and the old S&W Performance Center. I also put it ahead of the Delta Top Gun after much inner debate. The Steel I had a tremendous amount of refinement and attention to detail, not to mention extremely good build quality.

The Centennial is a common gun and I don’t care for special editions anyway. A friend of mine had one and it was nice, but I prefer the Steel I. The Billennium is the equal of the Steel I, but a bit too blingy for me.

The HF P210’s, forged or otherwise shoot very nice. However, my 1975 forged HF -6 is built no better than my 1967 -6.

It’s one of those super rare packages with the matching 30 Luger barrel and complete -7 rimfire assembly. They shipped with fully checkered grips, which are impossible to find.

It’s my favorite P210, though not as valuable as my forged heavy.

Very interesting. I will have to keep an eye out for a Steel I (and a Sphinx 2000). I like the traditional looks of the S&W 845 and 952 more, but it's hard to argue with quality of construction.

I had read a reasonably favorable post by Michael Zeleny about the Beretta 92 Centennial and thought it might be up to to the level of the Performance Center / Mastershop pistols, given the price and steel frame, so it is good to know that it is not.

I think the Centennial is up to those standards. I just think the Steel I got a little more attention to detail.

I love the Mastershop and the Performance Center, but I had to look at it with unbiased eyes. The Steel I is an extremely nice pistol.

I shot a Steel I once. I loved it. One of those "some day" guns. I've actually bought a couple of those "some day" guns over the last couple of years. My latest is my Sig P226 SSE.

OP, your photos certainly do all those pistols justice. I'm sure I would be a fan -- if only I'd ever actually seen one in person.

A Sphinx pistol is kinda like Bigfoot for me -- I've spend literally thousands of hours roaming the mountains and forests of the PNW, never seen a Sasquatch. With all the hours I've spent in gun shops, pawn shops, gun shows, gun clubs, ranges and the like … never seen a Sphinx in the wild, either.

They are very, very good looking guns (especially if one is a fan of the original CZ/Tanfoglio design) and appear exceptionally well put-together.
