What else are we going to spend it on? Food, clothing and shelter are luxuries that are often overemphasized, however, a top of the line rifle with quality optics is a joy forever.

If we were smart we'd spend it on things that make or save us money but passion is rarely smart. The cost of our rifles/optics and accessories is hard to justify, and the benefits are equally hard to quantify, but so many of us might live longer and happier lives in spite of it.

I grew up on a dairy farm in the 50’s. I’d venture there isn’t a member here that works as hard as my dad did, and we have way more stuff

We are incredibly fortunate that our work lives are relatively easy and a relatively small portion of our income goes to basics

You’re gonna spend it on something. Could be the latest big screen, a car that was in vogue fifty years ago, or suck white powder up your nose

Might as well be shooting

Yep. I'm a cheap SOB and already 25% of my pay check away to index funds and retirement plans. But guns are hobby money to me; they get bought after everything else is paid for, and I don't need to justify that spending as long as I enjoy it.

Would it be smart to invest even more and let that money grow over time? Probably. Am I going to pass up that nice pre-lock Smith to do it? Nahhhh.

Pay yourself first (Long term and short term savings), pay your bills, see if any is left over. If not, adjust your lifestyle until there is.

It's not rocket science.

I have been working for 42 years, and the rifle money is still not coming from savings or bill money. Selling some stuff (Sold a Trooper Mk III in 99% condition today), spending some fun money savings, & paying it off (Charged it) over three months. Sons of guns will get a little interest this time, they rarely do.

I knew a guy that worked doubles and triples plus holidays at the steel mills. Single. No real hobbies. At 52 he had about two million in savings, gonna retire at 54. Couple months short of retirement he had a heart aneurysm and collapsed dead.
