I’ve assembled an AR15 for longer range use. It includes an 18” Black Hole Weaponry 3 groove 1-8 polygonal rifled barrel.

I’m starting with Hornady 75gr .224 bullets, and Lake City brass. Powders I’ve got includes Varget, CFE223, H322, and H335. Primers I have are CCI 400, 450, and Wolf SRM. What combo would you suggest?

Try the Varget, work up the map to the range of 24.8 - 25.3 grains. Something in that range oughtta be magical with those CCI-400. I switched to Rem 7.5s but the CCI primers are good too. Velocity from a 20" barrel with my 25 grain load is ~2800 fps and I can usually keep up with my bolt guns in terms of accuracy.

Tried 24.3 gr Varget, CCI 450, loaded to 2.27”(longest my Magpul or Colt mags would allow). Very accurate at 100 yards, but only 2650 FPS. Figure 2800 FPS needed for 600+ yards. Please correct me if I’m wrong.

Yeah, faster is usually better so long as the accuracy doesn't fall off. That seems slow though, even after accounting for barrel length. Have you shot it out past 100 to build some DOPE?

Seems slow to me too. My Magnetospeed chronograph gave me 2650 after a couple error readings.

Which Hornady 75 are you using? The HPBT, or the ELD-M. If the latter, you should not load this bullet to mag length. It is a fine bullet for longer ranges, but must be run out long and single loaded.

I have run a lot of 75 HPBTs over 23.5 Varget with the SB small rifle primer and LC or TAA military brass. It is superbly accurate to 300m, and will hold up to 600. I earned a high master card and some leg points with this load. I've found the slightly reduced load from max to be a touch more consistent in my rifle to 300m which is the primary distance I fire this ammo loaded to mag length. I use the 75 ELD-M over 24R15 for longer ranges and single load them. I'm shooting a box stock RRA Natl Match A4 20" 1:8.

I wouldn't sweat the velocity much, if you do, you maybe should have considered a 20" or longer on your build. 2650 with a high-b.c. bullet will hold up well to 600 yards, may just require a bit more dope. Faster would be ideal, but not at the cost of reduced consistency. By all means, test the other suitable powders in your inventory. CFE223 is known to produce higher velocities. Consistency according to other shooters has been mixed. Some good, some not so much. Other powders commonly found on the line of high power competition with the 5.56 and 75-80 grain bullets are R15, H4895, and Viht N140.

Actually would have preferred a 20”, but I bought the 18” new/unfired here in the for sale section about a year ago. Definitely a premium barrel at a great price. It’s bee very accurate even with XM193.
