From the article:

The New Zealand Herald quoted Council of Licensed Firearms Owners spokesperson Nicole McKee, who said, “Some of the offered prices for higher-end firearms are well out of kilter. We’re talking thousands of dollars.”

McKee indicated that the government is paying such low prices that some gun owners are simply refusing to hand their firearms over.

Hey, gun owners, take it in the shorts. Your loss is worth it to make the public feel safe!!!

Remember, a gun is only worth what someone is willing to pay. And when they are being forced to sell, by the only buyer, did they really expect fair prices? That’s not how a power hungry government works. Hell they probably have to report the payment as income on their taxes too. The Crown gets them twice.

As bigbore44 said a gun that cannot be sold has little value. If the only buyer is the government, or some exempt small number of citizens, the supply is large and the demand is low.
Even things grandfathered drop in value for the same reason. In CA grandfathered things only have value because they can be sold out of state, they have little value in state if only law enforcement and FFLs can purchase them.
In the federal AWB firearms and grandfathered magazines only had higher value because they could still be transferred to most other people.
Something banned has no legal monetary value as it cannot legally be transferred or sold. Its only value then is on the black market.

Screwing people over in buybacks is nothing new.
During our recession government was using eminent domain to sieze large areas precisely because property values were at the lowest they would be for some time. If they gave 'just compensation' at a time when many homes couldn't sell and sat abandoned they could take people's property for a fraction of the value. In areas where some would try to hold out their home price just plummeted even further before they lost because nobody would buy a home that the government was going to sieze in the near future, reducing demand even more and dropping the value further.

Yes, we get taxed on it

Buybacks and governments goofing people over? Surprisingly (joke)! Worst part is that since this is forced, most people comply.

They could have pulled a Trump and just made you a felon if you didn’t destroy them with zero compensation...

Your parts can be changed out, even a semi can become bolt action with an upper change. A bumpfire can be swapped for a magpul. They are legos for adults.

I never owned one but I already had FA before they were invented.

I was just stating fact of taking something acquired legally and latter making it illegal to possess without any compensation for the loss.

This entire situation is so ass backwards and wrong it genuinely makes me sad.

Criminal commits terrible crime with a gun.
Government outlaws law abiding citizens means to defend themselves.
Government then proceeds to demand law abiding citizens turn in devices that were made illegal with the swipe of a pen.
Government then proceeds to fail to give fair value for said items.

The New Zealand government is literally demanding their citizens proceed to their local deposit location so they can be robbed openly by the representatives they elected. Governments have been toppled over such acts.
