Which Chronograph to buy?

For several reasons I have 2 chronographs.

Someone of less than menses material (aka idiot), shot my
Competition Electronics ProChrono Digital.
So I replaced it with a Caldwell Ballistic Precision Chronograph Premium Kit.
The shooter eventually replaced the CE.

Both have their good days & bad.
Bright sunlight can affect the accuracy.

And having the whole unit down range can be hazardous to the chrono.
But in general I have more faith in the numbers from the CE.

But don't get me wrong I like (an use) both.

The indoor light kit that can with the Caldwell kit works great on either chrono.

I started with a Caldwell Ballistic Precision then a Shooting Chrony Beta and now use a Labradar. Like some have said the Labradar is pricey but it's performance in my opinion is second to none.

Tons of good stuff here already. I use the Chrony F1 - about the cheapest option, but works well enough outdoors. Many better devices, many with more features...but just a matter of time until I shoot it to death so want low $ replacement option. Have already gone thru several sun shade supports.....so just a matter of time until the main body takes a critical hit :)

If you do go that route, best advice is use on an overcast day. Wow - no fiddling with sunshades and it reads really well hardly every missing recording a shot on an overcast day and no screens installed.

I see the OP already ordered, but I'd like to also put in a plug for the Labradar. The unit can be found on sale from time to time for $500, and yes Scheel's now carries them. You also need an SD card, a decent USB style battery, and a stand or tripod. It's an expensive investment but the unit works excellently. You can take readings at multiple distances that you specify, there is no chance of shooting the unit unless you're a special kind of stupid, and since its a doppler radar it isn't reliant on light.

It's my first chrono, and I'm glad I went straight to the top of the heap.

The CED M2 is by far the most reliable optical sensor chronograph I've used because of the infrared lights. Regardless of what optical sensor chronograph one buys, I would definitely buy the aux lights for it.

My wife was looking for something to give me for Christmas ...and that is what I now have. Got a good tripod, carry case and the IF sensor with rechargeable batteries. Nice unit.

Yeah. I just ordered one from Brownell's. $130 shipped to Alaska.
An excellent choice! BT to the phone/tablet and you can choose formats and data and email the results easily. I built a boo boo plate so it’d deflect bullets and used wooden dowels instead of the metal ones, but use the sky screens. Get some factory ammo and use that as a reference just to check the chrono is doing what you expect.

If you have the $$$, put a Labradar on the wish list. I gave my CED to my son and got one, and while it is a bit pricey, it’s so much easier.

I have three chrony's but use the Caldwell Precision more than the other two. Like the software that goes with it. I mostly use it for Pellet gun rilfe Ammo. It is a hobby in itself. Amazing how each rifle will shoot one pellet better than others. And so many different types of pellets and brands, and quality. The software makes a huge difference. And nice to pull up different data on the computer and store each string for each gun and each pellet. Otherwise it would be a nightmare.

I've got the Pro Chrono Digital and I've had decent results even in sunny weather.

I have come to the conclusion that it cannot divide time fine enough to distinguish less than 5 fps. The output average lines up with the impact I'm seeing out to 400 yards but because all velocities are at 5 fps groups, I just use the average and ES values, not that I would place much stock in an SD calculated from a sample size of a five shot group. Still, it does what I want it to.

another +1 for ProChrono.

In my opinion, if you already have a good tripod, good for you....now put that away and buy a cheap one from Goodwill or something and use that. Anything downrange is in jeopardy.
