Hey guys. I need a price check on a 1956 low 4 digit serial number Colt Python. It is a 6" barrel with 90+% bluing. No holster wear or major scratches. Gun has been fired very little and seems to have perfect lock up. Comes with original box and papers. So, big question, what's she worth?

Thanks!

Original grips?

Be careful when looking at decades old Pythons in "original" boxes. They are a lot of fake boxes out there....Sorry, 1K...I just saw you already said that.

Thanks guys... the box is no biggis for me, just thought I'd give you all the info. I'm going to shoot it a lot if I get it. I'm more interested in the low serial number and the amazing blue.

Well, then how much is the gun?

The guy was asking $2500, but now will not return calls

If you are just looking for a shooter, you can find one in the $1250-1500 range with a little patience. I agree with the Armored Farmer that prices do seem to have come down a little lately and they are certainly not jumping off the shelves like they once were. The fake Python boxes in my opinion have hurt the value as much as anything. People are scared to buy a new or like new one in the box for fear of a fake box and there are some good fakes out there according to the experts.

So priced around $3000 it would have been a decent buy but methinks the seller has gotten wind of a much bigger payday than $2500 and might be contemplating going the online auction route.

One can find pythons in great condition around my neck of the woods for $2,500-3,000 depending on minor condition issues and extras.

Myself, I would have a really hard time paying that money for a shooter. Who is going to work on it, and where does one get parts? What is the current status of the gunsmiths at Colt, is it still safe to send a $3,000 Python into Colt to have their current line of workers fix a problem, or make it worse?

But if one has the means and desire then more power to them. Really, in the grand scheme of things if one's hobby is shooting firearms $3,000 as compared to paying $15,000 for a sportbike (which will be worth 1/2 the value in a few years) or something similar seems like a bargain.

Without seeing it in person it is not worth anything. Even pictures will not tell the "whole" story.

As post #4 states. It is "worth" what someone will pay for it.
To me, no gun has that kind of crazy price tag. just because it is a Colt (Cult) and good luck finding anyone other than Colt to work on it if needed.

Oh, I know a couple guys that will work on them. Problem is they are both over 80....not joking, either....With all that said, I have had more than a Python or two, shot them as much as I wanted and never had a break down.

Minor quibble but "90%+" bluing is actually pretty well worn. What a lot of folks throw "90%" at is typically closer to 95-97% of the finish remaining.

$2500 for a legitimate 90% finish Python is $1300 too much. $2500 for a 97%+ with original grips isn't out of line.
