I have a 500 with a factory full choke.

I want a modified or improved cylinder.

What brands-other than Mossberg-will work in this gun?

It is the same as Winchester WinChoke and Browning Invector. (Not Invector plus)

Carlsons make them for Bass Pro brand (Redhead) and many other generic brands and for this particular choke system the Carlson tubes are as good as any and probably better than factory.

I bought some from brownells and e-bay, wound up with a few extras that work in 5 different guns, some chokes pattern different between different manufacturers so be sure to check each one.
I like Carlson and True choke for bang for the buck.

They are better. Get the Carlson's.

I think the OP was asking about a different barrel for his shotgun? If so, only Mossberg/Maverick barrels fit. Carlsons produced some 500 rifled barrels a few years ago but haven't seen one for a while.
If OP was asking about tubes, the other answers ar correct.

There are many after market companies that sell chokes for Mossberg. Probably the best for the money IMO is Carlsons. Just ordered some from Brownwell's, Just curious, did you buy the gun new or used? And what are you looking to do with the gun? Shoot slugs?

Bought-gently used-last year. I'd be surprised if it has 500 rounds through it.

Seller's description said IC choke, but when I pulled it, it was full.

This is for ducks, and for where we hunt and the ammo I shoot (never steel), full is way overkill.

So I'm looking for an IC, can't find a Mossberg, so wanted to know what else would work.

I have no faith in the knowledge of most gun shop counter jockeys; better advice and a lot more knowledge here.

Thanks.

Sorry, wasn't thinkin, but could have told you Brownell's had a free shipping day yesterday. You can buy Carlsons there. You might want to go ahead and get other chokes while you are at it. They have free shipping over $50.00 today and most days. Also ebay for individual mossberg chokes.

Now that we've established that we're talking removable chokes, a Mossberg 500 takes Invector chokes (not Invector PLUS). These are very common, at one time Mossberg, Winchester, Browning and Ruger all used them. Then when overbored barrels became popular the makers started using their own larger chokes.

Briley chokes are good too. Here are two Brileys alongside one of the original chokes for my Bora Arms BR99 shotgun (the brown one).
The BR99 also uses chokes for the Browning Invector shotgun, which in turn means the BR99 and Mossberg 500 can share chokes.
