I was at my local Walmart store yesterday looking at a new shotgun. During the course of my conversation with the sales clerk...she informed me that there is a new policy in place at Walmart whereas a mandatory background check is performed on all firearm sale regardless of whether the purchaser has a Concealed Pistol License or not. I was taken aback but not surprised by this action. Sadly, this is another example of corporate America bending to the whims of anti-gun groups.

Wait? You can buy a firearm with out a background check in your state if you have a concealed carry permit? What state is that?\

Idaho for one. CWL is an easy pass to purchasing firearms, its quite nice going in and slapping down a CWL and filling out the form and being done. One has to pass a background to get a CWL, so it's redundant to do it again for a firearm.

Michigan...one of the perks of having a CPL is the speedy process of purchasing a handgun. In Walmarts defense she informed me that it was usually a 15 minute process....and after reading what Gunny reported above...maybe a smart move on Walmart's part...from a legal stand point anyway.

That's the case in many states, but when I ask about it at an LGS they run the check anyways. Personally it's not a big inconvenience.

Add Ohio to that list.

But some companys (Rural King & Big R) still do it through their computer. Probably to CTB for whoever thwy employ.

It was like that here in Maine for at least 10 years. In the last 2 months, all the local walmarts decided to start selling firearms again.

I remember back in the 80s when they Walmart sold Ruger Standards, Montgomery Wards and Sears carried their own brands of shotguns. And the drinking age was 18. Ah the good old days. Back when being politically correct was both hands wrapped around a 44 magnum.

I don't think Fin will accept the CCW license but Sportsman Den did. I cant remember if I skipped the paperwork or they skipped the phone call? Rural king is terrible with BC. I know someone who has a current CCW and got it renewed twice, but had a charge from years ago that was dropped to a disorderly conduct. RK told him no twice but several other stores, including the sheriff that issued the CCW renewals said he was fine. He has purchased several more firearms from other places and comes back clean. RK always denies him. One guy was put on hold by RK and went to fin that day and was approved. I don't fool with RK.

As long as the background check required for a state CCL is equal to or greater than the background check that the NICS does through the FBI the ATF accepts a CCL as proof they are a qualified firearms purchaser.

I forgot about Fin, I bought a Model 642 around Christmas that they had on sale. They ran a background. Small shops appreciate when you have a CCW, they don't care for the hassle of the phone call.
I haven't dealt but once with RK. Their gun barn prices impressed me at first. But lately I don't see it much better than the other big box stores.

Humph. The Walmarts in my area don't carry guns at all.
Of the three near me, only one has a few rifles and shotguns. A few years ago when I was back home in Joplin, Mo. visiting, they had quite the gun counter. I didn't look this year.

I live close enough to TN that I've bought a couple of rifles in Chattanooga. That is the only time I've EVER had a background check done at the time of purchase. The background check done when I renew my carry license is all I need to buy in GA.

But honestly, it ain't a big deal. I was approved and able to buy the guns with absolutely no extra time.
