I wouldn’t mind having another rimfire silencer but I’m slightly worried President “The assault on the 2nd Amendment is over” might actually succeed in getting them banned through executive fiat. I would hate to see any more money poured down the drain than the significant amount I have already paid for my current cans. Based on the bump stock example we wouldn’t be compensated by the .gov for taking our property.

Anybody else holding off until they see if Mr. Populist carries through?

The reason bump stocks could not be registered as machine guns was the Hughes Amendment. Therefore, once they were declared to be machine guns, the only option was to make them contraband.

Suppressors are already registered under the NFA. There is no issue, then, of a change in their status by regulation. Any outlawing of suppressors would have to come from Congress, and that isn't happening.

I'm not 100% convinced of this. The House would certainly be OK with messing with the NFA to make it more restrictive. I'm not sure that Cocaine Mitch wouldn't be willing to take up a similar amendment if it were attached to something he really wanted. Mitch has shown himself quite skilled and getting GOP Senators to vote for the stuff he wants regardless of their own personal feelings toward the issue. The only thing that gives me hope in that regard is that his home state tends to look very unfavorably upon any sort of gun control.

Sorry to make this so overtly political, but the only reason NFA exists as a separate category is politics.

According to the things I am reading, it's come out in the last few days that the Virginia Beach shooter did indeed own his suppressor legally, and had gone through the months-long vetting process. By all reports, he was the kind of person that would have passed any background checks. This removes the ground from under the gun controllers, as their calls for more background checks, and further regulation of suppressors, are totally wide of the mark in this case. Even Trump has been notably silent after his initial statements.

AlexanderA: Are you saying that since suppressors are controlled through statute as opposed to agency regulation that makes their legal status much more difficult to change?

Elkins45: Consider also the possibility that the entire NFA registry is frozen much like the Hughes Amendment did to machine guns. I think this would be a more likely scenario since the feds could avoid having to confiscate anything. If that were to happen you would be happy you purchased that extra suppressor.

Yes, because it would take both houses of Congress, plus the president, to make changes. Certain things the president can do on his own, acting through the executive agencies (as was done on bump stocks). I don't see any scope for this regarding suppressors.

One good thing that may come out of this recent public attention on suppressors is that more people become educated about them, and realize that they are not the "silencers" portrayed by Hollywood. Already we are seeing the initial hue and cry starting to die down.

I'm not convinced that there aren't things that the POTUS could do within his Executive Branch that could make the process even more painful/time consuming, but I don't really think that's going to happen, and those options wouldn't include a ban anyway. If anything, I'm looking to get more forms in process because things might not look the same after 2020. I already have two F4s in process, but am looking at getting a few F1s going in the e-file system. I kind of like my AR pistol, it might not be a bad idea to have an SBR stamp laying around in case things go sideways on braces like they did on bump stocks.

Generally speaking, if there is something NFA you want, now is always better time to get started than later.

That's probably good advice for things like suppressors and SBR's, since you don't have a whole lot of money tied up. Machine guns are another story, considering the ridiculously high prices. That horse left the barn some time ago.

Thank you AlexanderA and MachIVshooter. It all makes sense the way you’ve explained it. I guess I never thought it all through.

Lol, I'm a poor, machine guns aren't even on my radar at this point.

I am neither rushing in nor holding back. Which is probably more related to a lack of suitable hosts than anything else.

The political shenanigans are just that, political, and shenanigans. Neither of which are much within my purview--right or wrong as that may be,

I know I am going to die someday but I don’t let that fact limit my plans for tomorrow. That’s not much of a way to live.

I'm holding off just in case they come through with making form 4 efile like was hinted might happen late 2019. It's the current 1 year wait time holding up next purchase, not the not-insignificant cost. Do you know how much it would suck to start a form 4 1 year wait and 2 months later they open e-file.?
I keep looking at making a form 1 can from an diversified machine kit, but I don't know......

Slightly less that waiting 1 year and 2 months and they don’t, than you have to wait another year and 2 months after you give up on the notion.

I would look at from a glass half perspective though and start a regular one now and IF they change, just add another.

Yeah, I have a buddy that is holding off buying just in case the HPA ever becomes a reality. That has been his excuse for what? Three year now?

The alternative to your question is Do you know how much it would suck to wait months and months for e-file that didn't open.

If you gaming the process, buy one now and if e-file opens, buy another one.

You can't win if you don't play.

Well, it also allows me to decide which can I want next and to save up for it. Funds are limited and my wife said if I save my pennies I can go to blade show next year!

LOL, first you were holding off purchasing in case the e-form started up again. Now you are holding off because you need the time to decide what you want and to save up money for it. Somewhere in there, I get the impression there is a goodly bit of purchase analysis paralysis going on.

Well sure! My funds are limited, cans take forever, I cannot test them and I want to make a good decision. In a perfect world I'd buy 2 cans for my next can. Maybe a rugged obsidian 45 and an all ti lightweight 30 caliber can. Like the sandman k. I just don't have a spare $1500 sitting around. So do I get a pistol can or a rifle can? Or new shoes for the kids so my wife quite nagging me "their toes are literally hanging out. The soles are gone. And we haven't eaten in 3 days." Thus the decision paralysis. Also, I want a thermal scope, a single action revolver, a shirogorov neon (knife) a rear tire for my car to replace the one the belt had separated on and will blow up any minute.........

LOL, the decision just isn't that hard to make. Now, I see you are adding in yet another confounding aspect that apparently is keeping you from making a purchase, the fact that you can't decide between getting a pistol suppressor or a rifle suppressor. Get a Silencerco Hybrid. It will handle 9mm to .45-70. It is a medium weight suppressor with good suppressive capability. If you are only able to afford one and want one that will do the most for you, this would be it. How hard was that?

However, as I see you keep adding new excuses, invoking the wife and kids and now claiming to be destitute, not to mention probably needing to sell one or more of the children in order to buy a thermal (which I bet is going to have a laundry list of excuses why you haven't bought one), I don't think it would matter if it was a $300, 5 oz, do everything can with excellent noise reduction, you would come up with a new reason not get one.

Given that there's a bill being introduced in the House to ban them I don't particularly feel very warm and fuzzy. If the Senate were to flip I have little doubt my considerable investment will be going directly into the scrap heap.

I am very much interested in suppressors. I have already suffered from hearing loss (from a one-time event 25 years ago). I religiously wear ear protection, but my hearing dog cannot which means he's not with me, and well, the bottom line is gun noise sucks. I would put suppressors on all my guns, even my CCW, and would never go back to non-suppressed guns if I was given freedom in this area. I do realize they don't silence guns and that hearing protection is still necessary with the great majority of ammo which is supersonic, but I would still go suppressed all-the-way.

The problem is not threats from liberal politicians to ban them, but that the NFA already demands submission to unreasonable infringements. Maybe I just need to be convinced that submission is better than to simply demur for a lack of a better choice.

The cost of submission is not insignificant. Silencers are ridiculously over-priced due to the restricted market and the compact ones that are even remotely practical for carry use wipes that I cannot easily renew from spares because those would be regulated silencer parts, which means I would have to buy several cans for one gun and routinely pay to have the wipes renewed. Were they not regulated, wipes would be cheap and user-replaceable.

Convince me the hassle, expense, and submission of forming a trust, the vetting, paying the tax stamps, buying several silencers, and constantly paying to have them serviced is a better exercise of freedom than not doing any of that and shooting loud.
