I moved away from Unique for 44 spl and had great results with Accurate #5, VV N-340 and WSF.
So now I'm considering a reduced load for 44 mag with a 240 gr JHP with N-340 or WSF.
Wondering if anyone has played around with these combos? I'm loading for a 7.5" barrel.

I don't have any experience with WSF, but if you don't mind my asking, why did you move away from Unique?

I ask because I am fairly new to .44 Spcl/.44 Mag. I'm still experimenting with different loads.

I'd guess metering or cleanliness issues, those are the only real faults I know of with Unique

I tried Accurate #5 about 20 years ago and it became a suitable replacement for Unique.
During the great component shortage I tried VV N-340 and then WSF and found good use for them.
For my uses Unique produced to much soot and the before mentioned powders are very clean in comparison.
I would guess VV N-340 may be the closest to Unique and then #5 in performance.
As a bonus #5, WSF and VV N-340 meter more accurately than Unique for me.

another consideration to replace unique is BE 86 , I have tried it in mid range loads worked well , I also tried sport pistol did well but what I do not like is fast powders in the 44 because of the
narrow charge min and max range , I still use unique at 8 to 9 grains and a 240 lswc , for example if I want 8.5 gr and 8.8 gr gets thrown no big deal , just my opinion but I have not tried any of the powders you mentioned
for some reason I have returned back to unique maybe their is so much data and known loads it has been around a long time , I may switch to be 86 when I run out of unique , we are lucky with so mant great powders to choose from now a days ,

I can see how one would like Accurate #5, it is a ball powder that meters exceptionally well. I've not used it in 44Mag, but I've been very happy with AA #7 in that cartridge.

Instead of Unique, I use Universal. I have no complaints about metering, and it burns fine.

Universal is very , well, universal. I use it in downloaded rifle calibers - 7.62x54r, .30-30 - as well as many handgun cartridges.

I will second the BE86 recommendation. Very good for mid-range loads. I like it in my Blackhawk, but doesn’t have quite enough gas to operate a Desert Eagle semi-auto.
