so if you had a 1000 bucks and wanted a nice deer rifle, not counting for a scope or rings and such. would you get something synthetic stainless steel or blued with nice wood. for up close or long range hunting.

Ruger 77/357 or 77/44. Stainless and synthetic, because every time I go hunting it seems the skies open up and drench me in freezing rain or snow. Besides, most modern guns I've seen have terrible wood compared to classic pieces.

While fond of the 77/357, aperture sighted, for a woods carbine?

150-200 yards is pretty close for "long range".

I have a Winchester EW and a Kimber. Both would be near the top of my list, but you'd have to get lucky to come in under $1000. Plus the Winchester would have to have a new stock. To keep it under $1000 I'd have to say Tikka.

I’d pick up a stainless & wood model, or a stainless & synthetic model and then buy a take-off walnut stock for it. Personally, I like Ruger M77 MkII and Hawkeyes, but if I put that subjective preference aside, I’d buy a Rem 700.

Today, I’d pick a 300win mag, if you’re considering long range and anything larger than deer. For deer as a top end, a 6.5 creed.

I would go to the next summer time gunshow that came along and get a 25+ year old Remington 700 BDL. You can probably get a nice one for about 500 bucks this time of the year.

Agree.

Again, in .270 Win.

:D

The stock finish is DuPont resin, so all you really need to do is grease/wax the metal.

My Steyr Pro Hunter .30-06 w 23.5" bbl was a 1K gun.
But got on closeout for 599 plus shipping :)

Bud got a used A bolt in .300 WSM.
I put a Leupold VX6 in Talley's on it just a bit ago.
Man those rings grip. Nervy, not wanting to mark scope.
That fire dot is pretty bad arse.

i do like that browing one in 7 rem mag would be nice. tikkas are great to.

The only other Hells Canyon I saw in the OP's price range was a .243. The 6.5 CM's were $2K :what: Since it is well known that deer are highly adaptable and have become resistant to all but the newest calibers, I chose the 6mm CM pictured.
