Shotgun, Pistol and Rifle

There was no scenario set for this hypothetical.

If going into battle I would want a service duty semi pistol and AR.

If this is a post apocalypse situation I would want a service duty semi pistol and a 12g.

In a current reality backdrop I would and do have all three and much more.

narrowing my choices to a sole long gun is fairly easy for me as im pretty much there already: a rimfire, 22lr or maybe 17hmr, rifle. i don’t have any fun or real need for a shotgun or a centerfire rifle. i can merrily plink away all afternoon with a rimfire rifle to become usefully proficient with it.

a sole handgun is tougher choice. for decades i had just one tucked away for protection: 2” steel 38sp taurus model 85 five shot revolver. after early retirement i discovered ruger single action revolvers. a 357/38/9 blackhawk or a 22wmr/lr single six fills many roles quite nicely.

Tough choice, as I'd be hard pressed to give up an accurate bolt action center fire rifle. Nevertheless, if forced, I'd likely opt for:

12 gauge pump action shotgun with a 28-inch vent rib barrel, 24-inch rifled slug barrel with cantilevered scope mount, and an 18-inch cylinder bore. Good for big game, upland game, and home defense. Remington or Mossberg, take your pick.

4-inch revolver in .357 mag. Great for field carry, and serves as CCW in a pinch. Mine's a GP100, but there are other options.

I think primarily like a hunter, and think I'd get the most versatility out of those two. I might take a look at a .22 caliber barrel insert for the shotgun as well.

Fortunately, this is not a choice I have to make.

AR.......can swap uppers and hunt chucks to deer.

And my P30L. Because it holds more than my 1911

In my situation,I could get by with just a shotgun. A .22 Rifle would be nice as well for small game and varmints since the ammo is cheaper. I like handguns, but they are not essential for me.

I'd pick my Henry 22 Magnum and Model 24 Winchester 16 gauge double, if it came right down to it. The 22 WMR can take anything from squirrel to deer, ammo is cheap and not hard to find (now); the 16 can be loaded with anything from ball to bird shot, and you have the option of 2 different chokes if needed. The ammo for the 16 isn't plentiful, but not rare by any means. I have enough to last me for several years at the rate I shoot it, and I have 3 16 gauge guns! In this area a pistol is something you carry while fishing to shoot the occasional snake, and I never was much good with a short gun anyway.

Pistol and rifle.

I like shotguns. I shoot clays about as much as I do rifles, I occasionally hunt dove, I’ve killed pests with them and I’ve seen first hand what they do to intruders around homes (as well as what bad guys do to other bad guys) with them.

The thing is in an emergency I don’t need to shoot clays. Shooting/hunting birds might be good if my survival depended on it (a pretty bleak prospect), but for hunting mammals a shotgun doesn’t do anything better than a rifle. In fact it does everything much worse.

For defense it strikes a devastating blow close up, but has a much more limited mag capacity (1-8 in most shotguns vs 10-30 rds for most semi auto rifles) and its severely limited past 100 yards (and even that’s with slugs, which makes it a poor mans, large game, inaccurate rifle).

Unless you have a slug barrel that is, in which case it’s slightly better at distance.

A pistol to be carried on you (when you can’t carry a rifle) and a rifle for everything else for me.

I believe 1 pistol, rifle, and shotgun will cover the basics for everything. Pistol obviously for out of the house carry. Rifle and shotgun can share the responsibility for hunting, home defense, society breakdown etc. But that is 3 and cheating in this particular game so I choose:

Pistol and shotgun. Here is why. Pistol, as mentioned, for carry. Shotgun is arguably (and I agree) a better jack of all trades weapon than rifles, even ARs. A shotgun can be very versatile with just different ammo. Slugs and buckshot for HD and hunting. Add in barrels and chokes just adds to the versatility of using a shotgun for multiple purposes.

I can't REALLY narrow it down like that...but...I can think of a few good pairings. Let me just say, if you made me choose between rifle and shotgun, I would side with most people here and say rifle all the way.

So let me see...

An AMD65 and a Charter Arms Bulldog?
A Ruger Gunsite scout rifle and a CZ75?
An M1A SOCOM and a 1911?
A Swedish Mauser and an M&P .45?
A Steyr AUG and a 357?
A Savage 99 in 243 w(or maybe a BLR), with an FN five-seven?

A 357 lever gun and a 4" 357 revolver?
Does that count?

How about KelTec's CMR30 and P30 pistol paired around the 22WMR round for another single caliber pistol/carbine pair?

Just some flippant thoughts, here...

I would go with a .22 rifle, Henry AR-7.

I would go with a handgun. But which one?
That’s the hard part...Eenie, meenie , minee, moe....:D

Pistol and rifle for me. With an AR and some upper swaps, plus reloading, I can handle most anything.

So probably an AR and some 9mm Glock, 17 or 19x

I'd miss out on grouse duck, and pheasant so that'd be sad, but I only hunt them a handfull times a year and really only own 2 shotguns anyway (I have many more rifles and pistols)

I'd say a matched caliber rifle/pistol combo makes the most sense. My choice earlier was based solely on what I own right now, but if I had to acquire a combo like that, if do the same thing. Mine would be a carbine that accepts the same mags as my G17, but there are many other solutions out there.

It certainly depends on your usage. To me a rifle is most useful for hunting or anything where I need more range and power than a pistol.

So a pistol caliber rifle fits nowhere in that category. I load all my ammo so it's just as easy to load a rifle caliber or two

Shotgun slugs can do pretty well at 100 yards.....and beyond. Talking reg foster type. Was no big deal to kill deer to 150 honest yards w smoothbore M 500. Of course the gun was scoped w a 4x and all slugs bought from same lot #. Rifled bore and sabots shot flatter and were even tighter group....in my 870s ( liked rifled bore better). Ammo expensive and recoil heavy. But man itd slam the deer. More dramatic in result than my three 35 rem and one 243 win kills.

But yeah.....side mounts and even clamshell.....might not bring out the best in a rig. Also bbl fitment .....who here has taped a flange up for tighter fit? Testing ammo is brutal and not cheap. But a very good combination might be had.

A lot of deer hunters see slug gunning as crude and for them it might be. The non weekend warrior might not be handicapped w a slug gun compared to rifle....if shots under 200. Under 100 the slug gunner might have an adavntage......the bigger hammer kinda thing

I have not experimented much w rifled choke tubes. The 870 WM i had was pretty sloppy and the choke tube leaded quickly. It was a 100 yard max rig w fosters. Shot my deer that yr at 20 LOL

In maine, i would take an ak47 and Glock 22 with 9mm and 357 barrels. thick woods and shots will be under 100 yards. can carry lots of 762x39 ammo. Buy it cheap, stack it deep! and the glock can ultilize 3 calibers. And it was been flawless with the 9mm barrel over the past 6 years
