The 228 never came in .40, the 229 was introduced to allow 40 with the milled SS slide. The 228’s folded carbon slide wasn’t heavy enough for the recoil of the 40, would have had to have a very heavy recoil spring from what I’ve read.

My first was a 220 iirc. Might interest you since the grip is far narrower than the 226. I personally I like the feel of the 220 best even though I have bigger hands. I dont care for any of their striker guns but the hammer fired guns are some of my favorites.
