If you could have only one handgun, what would you choose?

If I stay in Cali much longer, the way the gun laws are changing here (always getting worse), I might actually one day be limited to one gun. It would be a Nighthawk Custom Hi-Power

If you stay in California much longer, they'll jail you for some environmental clause if you shoot a gun. Probably accuse you of polluting the environment from gunpowder and toxic metal from the bullets.

Lol that would be like asking me if i could only have one vehicle to drive what would i drive!

Or if i could only eat one meal!

Well wait the meal is easy.... steak....

Sadly no one gun for me would work best in all the places where i might use one.

But in a SHTF situation it would be the Taurus Raging Bull with adapters.... which i have. And i can fire almost any caliber of handgun bullet available. From 22 to 454 Casull and 410.
(22, 380, 9mm, 38, 357, 44mag, 45acp, 45 colt, 454 and 410)

I'd probably go with my Colt Combat Commander or Glock 23. I've used both a lot, know them well. I've depended on them in tough situations, and both came through for me.

I would say for me it is my every day carry, baretta Px-4 storm compact chambered in 9mm along with 3 extended mags 20 per. Safe always

I use handguns for 2 things: plinking/target shooting and self defense. I don't hunt with a handgun.
If I could only have one, self defense would be the niche I am trying to fill.

So, I would go with a handgun suitable for that role. I would probably pick either a Glock 19 or a S&W Shield.

Funny thing about those choices is that they are 2 of the cheaper guns I own, and not really my favorites to shoot.

I would be hard pressed to just choose one handgun. I love them all and all have different purposes. Sometimes it’s a big bore single action revolver for backup while, sometimes a .22 auto for tromping around the woods, sometimes a 1911 in .45 acp, .38 super or 10mm at the range. Sometimes a single shot XP-100 or TC Encore. It just depends on the task it’s needed for. Just having on would be a hard question to answer and I pray, I never have to find that answer.

I have to really think about my own question! How about the rest of you!?!
I think it would depend on what role it plays, what is available, and my own finances.
Could be a cap and ball revolver. Could be a 1911. Could be a .22 Beretta or N frame S&W. It would all depend.

Let's think about this. One handgun means it needs to be reliable, versatile & portable.
I love pistols, especially the 1911 but with different ammo it may not cycle well so I'll go with a revolver. It can shoot anything it's chambered for regardless of powder charge or bullet type.
Since it's going to be used for everything it should be capable of taking anything I'll run into, big or small so I choose 38 Special/357 Mag.
Since it needs to be portable the barrel should be 4" or less.
DA revolver with a 4" barrel chambered in 357 Magnum

Not even a question. Glock 26 with a 12 round factory magazine. If I got to pick two the second would be a Glock 19.

Would be a 10mm for me. Glad it’s gaining popularity again. G20 or G29 is ideal, but I’ll give the nod to G29 because more concealable and it’s what I have. Would have a bunch of 15 round mags for it.

I've followed this thread now for 8 pages, and don't have a better answer than when I started...

Just to place a bookmark -- at the moment, I'll say that out of my current inventory, it'll be my S&W 60 Pro model. I decided to go with a revolver, so that left out the autos and single-shots. I wanted something with reasonable concealability (for me), so that reduced the size of the gun (frame size and barrel length). I wanted long-term durability, so that left out the exotic metal guns (scandium, aluminum, etc.).

Each reduction in options is painful, to say the least -- even as just a mental "exercise"... :uhoh:

I consider the 60 Pro basically an "over-built" .38 Special revolver. It'll handle .357 rounds in a pinch, but I won't be doing much shooting with those. I'll probably have a speedloader of .357s handy, just in case the extra oomph is needed for some reason (and it's nice to have that extra flexibility).

As my "only" option, I'd remove the IL and plug the hole. I'd have a qualified gunsmith smooth out the action for me (I have a 640-no-dash that I once had worked on for the trigger; its smoothness is unbelievable, and among the reasons my wife decided it should be hers... :D). Being a five-shooter, I'd practice the heck out of reloading it. :)

My only other comment is I'm glad this is just a mental exercise... :)

Well I'm already in this position but I have to change my answer since I've sold my Smith 64 DAO and am replacing it with a Shield 9mm.

I think I would have to say a p365. I’d much rather give that honor to a revolver, but the p365 gives you the ability to pocket carry, plus magazine options and shoot-ability to nearly equal a service sized pistol.

Yes... One of the options I eliminated in my check-down was pocket carry... But I could be persuaded otherwise. :D

I'll just keep following this thread. :)
