I recently purchased a box of Monarch 38 Spl 158 gr SJHP but haven't had a chance to shoot them yet.

What's your opinion on them? Anyone try them in a rifle? I plan to shoot them from my 1894. The numbers listed on the box (902 fps/ 285 ftlb) seem decent.

I got them to check the loading and feeding of 38's in my 1894 since They have a flat face for lever guns. They were actually some of the cheapest 38's at Academy.

I fail to see why .38 SPL is significantly higher than 9mm. It is virtually the same diameter, while the brass cases do have more material does that really equate to a double price point? Well, rant over. The monarch gives me good POA in fixed sight revolvers, I wouldnt rely on them for defense unless there was nothing else but for target practice and small game hunting go for it.

Supply and demand. I remember when 44 special used to be cheaper than 44 mag. And I am a millennial. That being said .38 special isn’t that bad in price. I used to reload it not so much now. Monarch is decent stuff for putting holes in paper.

Probably a good bit more, but come on man. .38 is still a mainstream use caliber and is arguably the most popular backup gun caliber there is.

Not even close. Sales of .38 Spl started dropping around and haven't quit falling since. Most LEOs are using 9mm or .380 as a backup. Since Glock has a big share of the handgun market the most popular backup for officers is a smaller Glock that shares mags.

Just look at the amount of shelf space devoted to 9mm and .38 Spl. That pretty much tells the story.

I see my stores are about the same. I buy ammo mainly from Walmart and bass pro

I don't usually shoot 38 but recently bought a box to transition my daughter up from a 22 and I was shocked at the sticker price. Even with no panic $20 for a box of 38 felt like highway robbery.

Can't help you with lever gun but have fired few hundred rounds 9mm .38spl and few .357 mag with no malfunctions

I know what you mean. I stopped buying ammo around 2004 when I lost a job and just started shooting again 2 years ago. The sticker shock is quite stunning for practice ammo let alone sd rounds!
