if you had $1000, what bolt action rifle would you buy

Troy, I’m a CRF junkie too. I also like your lean toward the .280AI

I’ve been very happy with my FNchester. Like many others have suggested, pick your favorite flavor of M70 and be happy

looks like a nice hunting shake setup, and the rifle. there's something about using a crf action, they just feel good. the win 70 ew looks really nice wish they had a 280 or the ai, the 7rm would be good tho.

This is kind of like which cheeseburger would you buy if you only had $4. It is a matter of taste as much as anything. There are a lot of good rifles these days.
I would be tempted to find a new old stock Ruger M77 in 270. Maybe stainless. But I like Ruger actions. I like made in USA. So I think twice about Brownings and FN Winchesters. But that isn't an automatic disqualifier. Kimbers can be great too. Occasionally you can find a new -old stock Rem 700 too.

If a good example were found for the price, either a 1917, or the Springfield (post '800,000 something serial#' /stronger receiver) with the aperture sight.
Never owned any of those. My only bolt-action guns from any World Wars are the Enfield #4 and #5 Jungle.

I would go to gun shows and try to find a really nice sporterized Mauser with a good barrel on it.

For something more modern the bolt gun that is at the top of my list is a tikka M695. I've been looking for one for awhile. After that I think I am all set on bolt actions.

Check Simpsons LTD for a good deal on a Husqvarna Mauser sporter -- they frequently get in a few from the 1940s with commercial FN Mauser 98 actions in the $4-600 range:

I picked up a relatively minty one of these at a local gunshop in 8x57 last year for under $350 out the door.

I found a JC Higgins Model 50 a few years ago on the rack just down the road and walked out the door with it for screaming deal. Cool rifle if you don't mind a Sears stamp on the barrel.

so if you had a 1000 bucks and wanted a nice deer rifle, not counting for a scope or rings and such. would you get something synthetic stainless steel or blued with nice wood. for up close or long range hunting.

A Marlin 783 bolt action, tube fed .22 WMR NIB.

For those who would say "That's not worth $1,000", I'd like to point out how much ammunition I could buy with the change...

The major mail order brands used to be a trusted sign for American buyers. Ward's marketed my Heym Mauser in the mid-60s under the Western Field house label:

ad that's why I don't own one....course the m18 I bought is pretty close to the same price regularly.
I shoulda bought my buddies original t3 when they were 450 bucks.
ya my dad had in the early 2000s, he had 3 A-bolts to. the brownings stayed, guys forget the tikka is a bare bone check rife to manufacture.

the cz 557 looks interesting, i hate they went from the crf, but from what i have seen the push feed cz is nice. they have not made may vayation tho. most are the 20 carbines. there is a 24'' american style style but only a few calibers still//
