So I keep a 12 gauge by my bed. How do I keep dust from collecting down the barrel? It seems like barrel down would make the gun unsteady even against the wall, and I have read stories about unlubricated condoms rolled down over a gun barrel, but I baby sit a grandchild and intend to let her mother teach her about such things. Ideas?

i would hang it on the wall high up, pointed in the safest direction and upside down. it would take 100 years for dust to make a bore instruction, i have seen mud daubers clog a bore in just a afternoon. a cotton ball will work fine.

Dust in the barrel? Don't worry about it.

My bedoom carbine (which is secured!!!) is in the open, muzzle up. I have a hotel keycard (I travel a lot) propped up to cover the front of the RDS, because that can get annoying, and I do not want to have to remember to disengage a lenscap. But the barrel? It would take a lot of dust to cause issues.

Option 2: Take it out and shoot it regularly :)

Place Saran Wrap over the muzzle and use a hair band to keep it in place.

12 ga. has a nominal bore diameter of .729". You could use a wooden tompion sold to reenactors for use with the Brown Bess (.75 bore). (You might have to sand it down a bit.) But since this fits inside the bore, you would have to be careful to remove it before firing the gun.

As i have the same problem. I just clean it like every six months. Its a smooth bore shotgun and not a long ranfle rifled barrel. that dirt/dust/lint will not hurt it at all. My garage shotgun, hung up behind my tool box has never been cleaned, just lubed. and i fired it completly covered in dust from a metal/work shop. When i cycled it, so much dust came out. but fire flawless. both are mossberg 500's

Really bad idea.

I use electrical tape over the bore of my rifles when hunting to keep rain and debris from getting into the barrel. The air pressure in front of the bullet blows the tape off before the bullet gets to the bore. Is perfectly safe and does not change point of impact. No reason it couldn't be done with a shotgun. Spare tape on the barrel in case I fire a shot and need to retape.

s about unlubricated condoms rolled down over a gun barrel

My unit used dry condoms overseas to keep heavy dust out of barrels of the vehicle weapons. Worked like a charm. So yes that is an option if household dust is a worry for you.

Store it horizontal or upside down would be a much better option than putting anything over the barrel. And you are more likely to encounter surface rust than a bore obstruction from dust.

Fold down a small piece of aluminum foil over the tip of the barrel, should stay there by itself until you need to use it.

Masking/electrical tape.
Still haven't used up the roll o masking tape I got for 49 cents at goodwill yet.

The best way to keep your barrel dust free is frequent cleanings with gunpowder and lead. If you let your HD shotgun sit for long enough between shooting sessions that dust build-up is actually a worry, you probably won't even remember what to do with it if you need it. Condoms, tape, foil, etc... are all completely unnecessary. Seriously, just go shoot it. ;)
