I have a bunch of 6.8 ammo I want to sell. Since most gun shops and retail stores wont buy ammo, I was wondering what other outlets I have. I googled it but cant find a straight answer. Also, if you sell online can you ship across state lines? I know usps doesn't ship ammo, but do fed ex or ups?

I am no legal expert but as I understand things----- unless you are set up to make ammo commercially (hold a FFL to manufacture) you cannot sell reloads. Factory ammo can be sold in or out of state within the USA. UPS and FEDEX do ship for the individual. No ammo through USPS at all though. There might besome local restrictions for the buyer so be aware of that as well.

I didnt see anything about handloads....

Yes its legal to sell ammunition

Yes you can ship by common carrier, UPS or Fedex.

Do your due diligence checking local laws where you will be shipping if shipping

It is illegal federally to sell any handloads YOU make unless you hold a FFL to manufacture ammo. You can however sell commercially made reloads from the likes of companies like Ultramax and such. Know the law and stay safe.

As others stated, ship via UPS or FEDEX but be aware that some of the franchise locations like Fedex/Kinkos or Mailboxes etc. may not accept ammo for shipment. You may have to take it to the Fedex or UPS hub.

It isn't illegal. I have never even heard this before and I've lived here for 20 years.

Kansas law does not:
  • Require a license for the purchase or possession of ammunition; or
  • Require a license to sell ammunition.
There is also no fuzzy or grey area with selling reloads. You aren't an ammo manufacturer and you aren't selling ammo as a business or primary income.

Same thing applies to firearms. You can sell those as well without a license as long as it isn't you're main source of income and/or you aren't operating under the premise of a business.
Meaning you can't willingly buy firearms with the sole intent to sell at a profit. At least not in any meaningful quantity.

You didn't ask but as a FYI not legal to send it to a non licensed person in CA.
Has to go through an FFL or licensed ammo dealer.
(just in case you are selling it online)

This is not correct.

If you manufacture with the intent to sell, you need an FFL, but if you are simply getting rid of handloads that you made with the intent to shoot yourself (say you sold the gun already), there is nothing illegal about this. Whether this is a smart decision or not is a different matter, but it is not Federally Illegal.

Heck, Federally, you can manufacture the whole gun if your intent is to keep it. If you change your mind later, you can sell it.

I sat down one afternoon and read a pile of stuff on the BATFE website and thought I had it figured out. I may be wrong but I will still not sell my reloads regardless. YMMV

I want to send as a gift to a gal in CA a few boxes of my reloads. I know USPS won't take it but UPS will. She has a CC there, any problem with that?

I don't know about KS, but I've seen people selling ammo here in AZ on Armslist. It's mostly commercial and they generally want local sales only, though.
