if you had $1000, what bolt action rifle would you buy

I would beg to differ. I suspect a lot of deer have been taken with a 22 magnum. At night. While staring into a spotlight.
ya many deer were killed by 22 mag, my dad said on the farm as a kid, he would shoot deer with the 22 long and go in for lunch. finding the deer in the field dead. think he shot the ribs for the lungs.

I never understood why CZ only offered the 557 in a 20” barrel when they first came out. There’s no way I would have bought one. I have a 550 and it’s my favorite bolt action of what I own. Now that the 557 comes with a 24” barrel I don’t see anything separating it from a Weatherby Vanguard which sells for $100.00 less. So I’d probably get another Vanguard instead of a 557.

Fair enough, lol. let's say that it's not general use deer rifle.
I didn't have a .22mag otherwise that's probably what I'd have used mostly for damage control on our farm.

CZs wood stocks are nicer than the standard sporter stocks on vanguards. Otherwise I totally agree....I also happen to just really like the 1500/Vanguards.

actually if I wanted wood.id probably buy a 1500/vanguard and put an old s&w 1500 deluxe stock on it, which I personally think is a snazzy stock.

I tend to agree on the Tikka's. They are superb working rifles but the price has really gotten up there. I got mine for $450 15 years ago. Really nice build quality but kind of hard to argue with a ruger american or the like at half the price. The tikka is better, but I'm not sure its twice as betterer.

if i pic up a ruger american one day id like to buff the bolt, i have this blue stuff that will get anything to a mirror shine, then it would be as smooth as a tikka for 1/2 the money.

or just have it cera or duracoated. that fills the grooves in the receiver and bolt well enough to make them nice and smooth.

I own two Stainless Remington 700's in .270 Win. They both shoot great. The nice weather one has a Stocky's stock, but the other one wears a fibreglass Rem Sendero stock. Both shoot under 1 MOA and are very reliable killers. They both wear 3-9X Leopold scopes.

I have 650 in my Steyr Prohunter.
Add 70 for the Recknagel scope base
50 for the Burris sig Zee rings
225 for the Redfield Revolution 3-9x 50mm
Another 70 for a spare mag and softer recoil pad.

Just under 1100

Tolerable IMHO.

ahh but a deer rifle it's not! :p

Ahhh...but yes it is!

It has plenty of power to take down deer, properly used.

I will grant, however, it's not legal in all places. You can, for instance, hunt deer with .22 WMR in Maine:

"Illegal equipment: Deer may not be hunted with the use of dogs, artificial lights, snares, traps, set guns or any firearm using .17 or .22 caliber rimfire cartridges, except that .22 caliber rimfire magnum cartridges are permitted. Deer decoys are legal."

https://www.maine.gov/ifw/hunting-trapping/hunting-laws/deer-hunting.html

(I found that Mississippi, Montana, North Carolina, and Vermont apparently have no restrictions.)

People throughout human history have hunted larger game with significantly less fire power.

It's too late to ask me which rifle I'd choose. I've had Remington 700s for about 60 years, so the safety is an automatic move for me and I'm very used to "semi-uncontrolled" round feeding. The trigger mechanism/pistol grip is also familiar...and the rifles come up to aim like they were made for me. Yes, I have a CZ 455 (.243 Win) and other bolt-action rifles, but I don't normally use them for deer hunting, though I got one with the CZ and it was fine.

Hopefully, you're not as tied to Remington 700s as I am. Take a good look as CZs, Winchesters, Tikkas and others, but try to stay away from Marlins, or you may be sorry. I've had too many manufacturing errors on them to list here. Hard to beat 7mm08 in a short, light rifle.

I got two CZ's. One is a 452 that is unbelievable. If I had to buy another 22 it would be another CZ. The other is my CZ 550 Safari 375 H&H. Accurate and runs well. The set trigger portion, if gone, would not be missed. With these two rifles it would be no problem to own another. I have not had any experience with a Ruger long gun made in this century. No comment on the Ruger. I was at our range where the next person to us was shooting a factory custom CZ550. The rifle was in 404 Jeffery and was a knockout.

I don’t think I’d be needing a 280AI on a rainy day. Rain deflects bullets too. Especially at longer distance. Rain also inhibits visibility and reduces perceptible noise in the woods. So you should be able to get quite close. Even on a bean field. Again, no need for the AI.

And I’m not dropping a grand on a rifle that is much more likely to get get beat up, scratched up, fallen on or filled with all kinds of nastiness. Rain makes mud and makes rocks slick. Nope. Not me. If I was going to buy that rifle, it wouldn’t come close to a grand. A Ruger American, a T/C Venture All Weather, something along those lines. Because when you get home, you still have to clean it. And I’d much rather clean a $400 rifle and find a big gouge in the stock or scratch on the barrel than I would on a thousand dollar stainless rifle. But that’s me.

But not nicer than the 24" CRF Ruger Africans.
When you get into the higher grades of CZ you are talking about a different animal. Too bad we can't put these rifles side by side. I don't think anybody offers as many calibers as CZ. It's hard for me to make a comparison I do not own a current generation Model 70.
