(Blank) Violence

My deepest aggravation is that my hobby tools are demonized, I am then demonized and the causal cultural behavior is not permitted to be discussed - it simply doesn’t exist - it hides in plain sight - you can feel the brainwashing all around you which is based upon instilling a primal fear to even utter any comment that counters the narrative.
I feel an internal frustration that what my eyes see and my ears hear and my brain concludes is a truth that is condemned by some perverted and disingenuous agenda - like crossing some strange boundary into crazy land. It makes me angry, it makes me want to fight. The truth is very important to me and having a segment of society actively engaged in denying that truth seems to me a very risky venture.

This right here. If we don't responsibly pass on the traditions, they will be lost. The people screaming for bans show, in their words, their complete ignorance on the subject, because they were never responsibly introduced to firearms. Some will never change, but some learn to appreciate or even enjoy shooting, once we quit yelling back and show them the appeal. If they won't listen, move along.
Yes. That’s exactly what I meant.

If we don’t pass the torch to a new generation then the cause will be lost at some point. It won’t be a matter of if, but when.

I mean it’s great if people like to shoot for the fun of shooting. Or sometimes you just want to focus on improving yourself. However at some point after you learn a skill you should help someone else out. It actually improves your own skill anyway.

See one, do one, teach one.

Pick a few youngsters to help out, affect their lives positively while you’re here and if you’re real close to them maybe before you pass leave them something to remember you by. If it wasn’t for that I would’ve never started shooting myself. People actually stopped and took the time to teach me something. At some point I should probably kick the ball further up the field. You probably should too.

Whether hunt'n , muscle cars, choo choo trains or 2A / American History , if it's not TAUGHT it's relegated to history. And, even history is being changed (i.e. past) and shaped (i.e. current and future).
Exactly! I read a lot about history and ancient history in particular. I was reading about the famous Cretan archers, who were known the world over for their archery skills and used by major powers like mainland Greek states and the Romans to great effect. This was not a short lived thing but dates back to the Bronze Age Minoans into the 15th century, spanning nearly 4000yrs. It went on to say that most modern day Cretans have absolutely no clue that for almost four millennia their island was home to world renowned archers. What is not taught is quickly forgot.

The media machine won't be happy until we're all either face down in a gutter with a bullet hole in the back of our heads, or disarmed and taking it up the ass (metaphorically and literally). They have no qualms about doing anything, including blatantly lying and twisting the truth, to achieve this.

People dont want the Truth.
I read that and heard Col. Jessup yell:

More like they can't handle the truth;
Then there's the longhaired bearded guy on the mountaintop asking "What is the truth?"

This is violence, regardless of the tool used; and as mentioned above, it is typically involving gangs and drugs.
WAIT! You mean lawbreakers? I wish some government body or media outlet would be interested in finding out "why" These things are occurring in the face of all those gun laws we already have instead of being solely interested in counting coup against their political or ideological opponent.

Here's a new book on 'gun violence' that seems not to emphasize the gun as much as the social issues. I haven't read it, just this column. I might try to read in the future. Looks interesting:

https://www.vox.com/policy-and-poli...t-bleeding-out-urban-gun-violence-book-review

But in his new book Bleeding Out, criminal justice scholar Thomas Abt argues that it does not have to be this way. He presents a vision for dealing with urban violence by fundamentally rethinking how law enforcement and other government resources are used — a cost-effective solution that could save lives, while being more palatable to both political parties than sweeping gun control.

Never work, gun violence and gun control carry so much more political weight than just fixing social problems. When did you last hear a politician scream to the masses they wanted more laws to cure urban social issues?

And, of course, the rhetoric is functionally empty. Even in that paragon of Socialist virtue, the USSR, there were illegal firearms.

For that matter, there were criminals in the USSR, organized ones, too.

More laws do not make a safer, crime-free society.

Polities with more liberty tend to have less crime. Losing liberty increases crime and criminality.

We have had a spike of gang homicides here in the last few years. They are calling it "gun violence" Not gang violence as it should be called. There are now anti gun groups here taking advantage of the situation for political brownie points. They want to blame legal gun owners for the violence but won't admit that Chicago has been exporting its trash here for the last 20 years. Our police department has yet to create a anti gun task force like other cites in the area, but I fear its coming.

the human source of the outcome
really is an effective place to focus.

For example, Boston's anti-violence initiative in the 90's (called Operation Ceasefire) actually did reduce youth homicides by 63% per month (as reported by the U.S. Department of Justice):

https://nij.gov/topics/crime/gun-violence/prevention/pages/ceasefire.aspx

and

https://www.ncjrs.gov/pdffiles1/nij/188741.pdf

Operation Ceasefire used the focused, simultaneous applications of carrots and sticks (incentives and hardball policing) to influence the very small number of individuals who were viewed as likely to commit violent crimes.

The threat of time in jail reaches me; I have no desire to spend time there. I don't need carrots. Nor do I have any idea how to create effective carrots for urban youth.

But social scientists today (like Thomas Abt referenced above by GEM) tell us the combination of carrots (job training, free access to social services) and aggressive law enforcement are most likely to reach and influence the limited number of violent actors in many of today's big cities. If carrots plus sticks are needed to overcome, say community mistrust of police, fears of disparate treatment based on race, or any other concerns, in order to effectively influence violent offenders in urban centers then I'm all for doing it. Let's just do something that has been shown to actually work, instead of marching to the silly media drumbeat of "more gun control now"!

BTW, the second document I linked to above is really fascinating reading. Its not an academic treatise; more like a novel, or story narrative. Not quite Tom Clancy, but pretty close. Its certainly worthy reading for anyone who has a real interest in reducing "gun violence".

Whether they come at the issue from the left or the right.

The issue with carrots and sticks is that some of these kids can earn more in one week selling drugs than they could in 2-3 years working a McD's job commensurate with their education and skill sets.

"Gun violence " isn't a real thing. Until that gets understood by the masses we're forever behind the ball.

You're correct. It's really "violence using guns". The other mocker implies that the guns themselves committed the violence, and this is what a lotta folks tend to believe. Regardless of the terminology used, 25 shootings in one weekend even in a Metropolis as large as St Louis, is a sad and horrific thing. As much as we want to defend our 2nd Amendment rights, we have to admit this. The problem is not guns, but violence in general, and that is where the emphasis should be.

AND that violence is mostly black on black violence that involves illegal drugs. Our "War on Drugs" doesn't seem to going as well as planned.

The MSM's gigantic preference to distort self-defense police shootings reminds me of the late 60s and 70s.
About what fraction of these today involve gang members?

The so-called "Black Lives Matter (but not police lives)" movement is partly descended from the Marxist-inspired Black Panthers and other anarchists.
The original Panthers were sometimes photographed with guns and understood Mao's comment about "Political power comes from the barrel of a gun" or such, very well.

Has "knife violence" become insignificant in the US?
Well...not so in the UK.

As Steve S said, this is a rather complicated issue. The words "Gun Violence" makes the solution seem simple. If the news media started telling the truth about violence and its causes most of the American public would simply stop paying attention. Complicated matters do not sell on TV very well.

The News networks do not want to confuse us with the truth and facts. Thye want to confuse us with feelings. Turn the people against guns and gun owners. Blame it on the gun and owners of guns rather than on the gang bangers, murderers, high on dope fool crazies, mentally unbalanced. Lets not forget the wannabe martyrs. This is how the elitist brainwash the masses. Wash, rinse, repeat. Wash rinse, repeat. They brainwash by repeating the same old lie over and over and over until even people who are fairly ( and I say fairly loosely) intelligent into believing turning in our guns is the right thing to do. Doing so will cure the "gun violence" problems we are told over and over. To some degree it will but those who are hellbent on killing will find other methods, knives, bats, cars, bombs and on and on. What it accomplishes is making law abiding citizens now more susceptible to violence. We are not like other countries. We fought England for independence and won because we had the same weapons as the most powerful military in the world. We are Americans. We fought for our freedom once and we may have to do it again. We may all have to man up, suck it up and stand up to the most powerful country in the world once again. This time our very own.
I should stop now
Rant off... for now............

I find it very suspicious that these billionaires suddenly want to fund all these gun control groups. Those bastards don’t give away their cash for no reason.

Feels like the world is heading towards tough times.

How would you answer the question? How do you disarm these people?

Prison for enough time the criminal is incapable of causing mayhem, i.e. life.
There is no way with any law enforcement system I would want to live with can these people be prevented from causing mayhem. Probable cause and innocent until proven guilty &c.
