Ok guys I am in the process of building one of these and I need help finding a suitable bullet for whitetail hunting

So I ask what bullet for hunting whitetail?

Gonna take some trial and effort I think. What are the factory loads? If that does it for you try to copy them. 180gr is what I think I would like but I'm not into the round and haven't loaded for it.

There are 230gr lead pin bullets for the .38 if you want heavy and subsonic.

I'd buy some 147gr hollow points designed for the 9mm and load it hot. If that failed, I'd go to the 158xtp.

Given the questions on bullet diameter I would slug the barrel. Winchester says .357 but a lot of the ammo so far is using .355 bullets. Slugging your particular barrel will tell you what you need diameter-wise . I would buy a lee bullet sizing die appropriate for the barrel. Then select what ever 35 Remington bullet looked like it would meet your needs. Run them through the die and load them up. Seem like a better plan than trying to make a pistol bullet work.

At max loads and short distances even the 180gr XTP'S are a little lightly constructed. The 147gr 9mm bullets will practically disintegrate at those velocities.
I run VMAX and AMAX on deer. I am selective on what shots I take though. That would fit my goals exactly.

Might need a RNSP or PSP of some description to feed reliably. Would take some testing.

To my knowledge there are precious few hunting bullets out there in .357 diameter that are not an FP or an HP.

Reading this thread is making me realize that the .350 Legend concept/implementation was/is somewhat of a fiasco. Especially @mcb ’s post about varying diameters of barrels and projectiles. What a cluster.

It gets even worse when you realize they decided to use proprietary brass instead of 5.56/.223 for no discernable reason other than "just cause". They should have just standardized 357ARMAX instead of this designed by committee "Ledgend"

As badly as they dropped the ball though, I'll probably still pick up one of the Ruger Americans or maybe an AR upper.

I'd grab a box of those 9 MM heavy XTP pills and try those out. I loaded some up for my 9X21 and Javelina hunting.
