So about two years ago I came across this lil hand I rifle in 17 hmr nib for 175.00 and thought it would make a great cut down carbine to keep in my vehicle for the suburban groundhogs I hunt. I have a couple places and the owners are friends and I stop by often and often don't have a gun with me for the groundhogs. My ccw would be a loud stretch :) I have been using a lol savage mk II in 17 mach 2 and like it but don't like the idea of it being in the truck most of the time.

I had bought my lathe a few years ago intending to be able to tinker and this is my first venture into a pretty big mod using it. I left it a bit longer than legal at 16 3/4 but figure if I messed the crown up or get better at the lathe later or want to try threading I have some screw up room.

I will need to sight her in. I had bought the scope from a friend a couple months back for the project.

I have seen several shortened hand I rifles and always thought they would be even more hand I that way. I have a 44 mag I will likely do sometime later too for short range thumping n such

You realize all the 17s are factory tuned to shoot with a specific length barrel. Since you have obviously ruined any potential, please send to me for restoration.
All kidding aside, one of my favorite handy type guns is a Ruger Frontier 77 in 308 and it has a 16" barrel and way shorter than normal length of pull.
Enjoy.

ya about got me... I know t/c contenders with shorter barrelsthat shoot the 17hmr really well... one of the reasons I was not afraid to try :)

I have a Tracker 17 with 6 1/2" barrel that has, on occasion, held 2 moa.

Those Handi rifles sure have the appeal of a work horse varmint rifle. I shot a friends in .223 and it was a great shooter. I always keep an eye out for one in a useful caliber as a splurge-not-so-splurge buy.

Good choice on the shorty and caliber. I bought one of these before Rogue Rifle company sold to Keystone. 16" heavy bbl in 17 HMR. in a child size stock. It has ridden on the dash in prairie dog fields and done the job well. A few years ago, a guy at work had ground hog problems and I loaned him the rifle. It has an old glossy Leopold 4X fine crosshair scope and I keep it in a short soft case with 100 rounds. He was amazed - said the ground hogs just fell over with one shot. He even worked on some otters that were cleaning out his catfish pond. I think we was sad to bring it back and pretty sure he went looking for one.

Oh, man -- I love these specialty projects! :)

Well done, OP!

I have a sportster .22LR that I have been considering a similar project on. The trigger is the limiting factor however. I already replaced the forestock screw with a thumb screw but can’t bring myself to chop it.

I do like the 17HMR and have shot some pretty respectable 5 shot groups with my Savage 93, especially after I did a very simple trigger job. What I like best is it prefers the A17 which comes in the 200 round box, that I get at Wal Mart for $49.95 or so. So far I've tried Remington, CCI, and the Hornady and all will group OK, but the A17 has it over all of them. Note I've also shot the 20grain and it shoots fairly well with those also, but when you take in the cost, I'm just cheap.
