A friend showed me a beautiful revolver this morning, trying to determine a value. It was his father's and I don't think my friend interested in selling at this time, but I told him I'd try and get an idea what it's worth.

It's a Colt Police Positive, .38Spl., with a 5" barrel. It appears unfired, no ring or mark whatsoever on the cylinder, bright shiny 100% blueing, no scratches, holster wear or marks anywhere, wood grips are perfect. It has the original box with the related info on the outside of the cover.

He thinks his Dad bought it in the late 50's, early 60's. I was surprised at the size, frame is pretty small, barrel fairly slim.

Any collectors here that can give a ballpark figure?

Police positives are towards the lower end of the Colt revolver price scale. An absolutely mint with box 5" .38spl. would likely be seen at a local gunshop or show around here with $600 on the price tag, say $100 less in .38 S&W.

I have bought and sold several "shooter grade" P.P. Specials over the last few years in the $300-400 range.

I would say somewhere around $600 to $700; maybe more if a collector is really interested in it since it's in such nice shape and still has the original box. Your friend might also want to get a letter from Colt detailing it's history.

Check to make sure of the caliber; the Police Positive was 38S&W while the Police Positive Special was the 38special version. Both are the same size.

Smith M19 above my Colt Police Positive as a size reference:

Thanks for the info on the different models. I checked with him this morning and it is indeed the Police Positive Special.

As I mentioned in my first post, he's not interested in selling. He's an older gent in not particularly good health who wants his heirs to have some idea of the values in his collection.

Good idea. Make sure they know the trophies their grandfather collected and the significance of them. Too many times , heirs just sell away their fathers and grandfathers stuff, not knowing what it is.
Making sure they have knowledge of what a BIG DEAL it is to find a mint condition Colt.. and why others envy them.. will make sure they don't sell the experience away.
