Hunting season opener is near.

Our first day of hunting is September 1st, the opening of dove season. We invite a bunch of guys for an all day hunt. We hunt the morning, and then clean the birds and cool them out for an evening meal. Then we take a break during the hot part of the day to have lunch, swap lies, and maybe shoot some cool guns the guys bring (H&H's .470 nitro express double rifle is a favorite). The afternoon hunt's birds are cleaned, washed and divided among whomever wants to take some home. We normally kill around 120 birds, but our best year was 235.

After that, we don't hunt anything until after a hard frost (mid-October). Although this year we may go for fall turkey.
Anyway, I was just wondering if they are any good to eat.

They have a larger breast with lighter colored meat than the mourning doves, but they are quite good. Probably 3/4 of the birds we get are Collared.

I LIKE the Eurasian Collared doves. They taste just like morning doves and have more meat on 'em. We can take as many as we want any time of the year, too. :D
I see several around here but have never shot one. They don't look like they are as fast as morning doves. I have been on some good dove shoots and the little buggers will humble you in a hurry. Opening day, one year, I shot 16 with 32 shots. That is the best that I have ever done. Three days latter I took my 28ga, shot 13 times and never cut a feather. Packed up and went home with my tail between my legs. LOL

I shot 3 boxes and only got 4

Have to try my FrankenRuger 10-22 this year. 80s receiver, Jard trigger assembly, hand me down Ruger target stock and an ERShaw barrel with 6-24 Bushnell. Been fiddling all winter and got it bedded and sort of zeroed. If my new knee (3 weeks now) will let me get up to my deer stand on the creek I have a whole Walnut and oak grove to snipe in. Granddaughter can switch off and retrieve. She will use my CZ455.

It's almost August..... Time to prepare for squirrel season which starts Sept. 1st around here. Trying different IMG_2577.JPG 22lr ammo in the CZ-455 off the bench just out of curiosity and to check zero. This is the CZ mentioned in my previous contribution to this thread. Took it out a few times and never got a shot at a squirrel. Hoping to change that this coming season.

Well my goodie bag for September 1 dove season arrived over the weekend. 1 dove vest, 1 Carlson’s 20ga modified choke, 1 Carlson’s 20ga imp cyl choke, 1 25 pack of sight in targets for tuning the deer rifles and squirrel rifles. Next I need to figure out eyewear.

if you can get over how bad they look try to find a pair of these made by tasco, there the best i have used, after a min i forget i have them on. they're the only ones that don't fog up, i use the clear ones. good luck with your dove hunting it looks like fun, i need to find land in pa or nj to try it out.

Get your small bores ready, Aug 1 is the squirrel hunting opener here in Illinois. Less than three weeks away.
Not only a chance to get in the woods to hunt, but also to scout for deer sign, and hone your woods skills.
I'm ready for a break from work.

The hickory trees and blackberries are loaded this year.

When does your season begin?
Do you have your gear and your license....and your bug spray ready.?
What will you be using for squirrel hunting.?
For me squirrel and rabbit comes after a good frost. I don't like dealing with fleas.
A 17 HMR gets the job done.
