Our first day of hunting is September 1st, the opening of dove season. We invite a bunch of guys for an all day hunt. We hunt the morning, and then clean the birds and cool them out for an evening meal. Then we take a break during the hot part of the day to have lunch, swap lies, and maybe shoot some cool guns the guys bring (H&H's .470 nitro express double rifle is a favorite). The afternoon hunt's birds are cleaned, washed and divided among whomever wants to take some home. We normally kill around 120 birds, but our best year was 235.
After that, we don't hunt anything until after a hard frost (mid-October). Although this year we may go for fall turkey.
They have a larger breast with lighter colored meat than the mourning doves, but they are quite good. Probably 3/4 of the birds we get are Collared.
