Silicone gun rags

I have used them for years. Great for a quick wipe down after handling or a final once over after cleaning.

I have a Pro Shot cloth bought few years ago and free one from Olight, I also use microfiber cloth misted with Rem Oil

The last thing I do after cleaning is a quick wipe down with Hoppe's #9 Gun and Reel cloth.

Same, but with ballistol.

I have one next to the bedside safe to give the carry gun a quick wipe down before I put it in for the night, especially in the hot summer

I have fond memories of a silicone cloth (Garcia? Birchwood Casey?) in a white plastic bag that was used religiously. Graduated to Rust-Pruf, a small jar with felt pad on the bottom and a bit of chamois saturated with some petro product. Finally went to Break-Free CLP on a cotton patch kept in a jar. Never a problem with any of them.
I have read that silicone can interfere with painting or finishing wood, as it is difficult to remove. It was one of those "Better living through chemistry" things like Teflon that they promoted for everything in the 60s and 70s. The best thing about silicone lube was that it was less likely to attack or distort plastic and rubber bits.

The best product in a "rag" is the Sentry Solutions Marine Tuff Cloth. Silicone rags used to be the best thing going, but Sentry Solutions passed them by years ago.

I've been using the regular Tuff Cloth for a couple of years and had really good results with it.

I've been making and using my own for decades; currently using WD40 silicone spray on discarded cut up cotton t-shirts. I also spray the innards of all my firearm cases with it. I've had excellent results.

Once the light oil evaporates, what WD40 leaves on the surface is silicon. I cannot see any advantage to buying rags saturated with silicone versus making your own.

Been using a Hoppe's or a Birchwood Casey Gun and Reel Silicone Cloth for more years than I can remember. Work really well and last a long time.

I usually keep one on my range bag and they do work well and last a long time. I also have found that ankle-high athletic socks work very well because I can slip them on like a glove. With a light lubricant on them, I slip one on each hand for the final wipe-down. Have found that about any decent gun lube works. Have lots of them because walking around a track is my favorite exercise. After miles of walking the worn socks make good gun rags.

I have used a cloth that might have started as a silicone cloth years ago, but now it is impregnated with Rig and all sorts of gun oils. Gets the final rubdown before the gun sock done, leaving a pleasing film of protection.

I have been using Rig grease on a rag to wipe down guns after use. Works well.

What do they use, if you know, and why is it better than Silicone. (I never was a fan of Silicone)

As I mentioned in another thread, I use Rem oil that's left on the cloth after wiping my guns down and rub the stock with it. After many years it's left a nice patina on several stocks.

What I use is a soft cotton cloth I that I put on a light coating of Mobil 1. I keep it in a sandwich size ziplock bag.

I had used silicone gun rags for years. Outters used to make some very good ones but stopped making the old gray ones. I shopped around and started buying them from Wilson combat but they stopped selling the ones I started out getting and went to a cheaper one. For about the last year I have been using Otis microfiber rags, they come in a package of three for about $5.00 and they can be washed and reused. All I have been using breakthrough gun oil to saturate them with. The last breakthrough oil I bought a gallon can. I just use a large syringe to suck it out and transfer it to the spray bottle. This combination works well. I have been using the same rags the whole time. I just hand wash them. Worth a look if you want good gun rags.

I used to like the Kleen Bore Gun Cloth. It was a silicone impregnated cloth that actually smelled like cherry pipe tobacco. Now, they are the same minus that smell. I kind of miss the old ones. The smell brought back some old memories.

I prefer to buy my silicone cloths. They come in their own zip lock bags and look different from all my other rags. There’s no mistaking a cleaning rag for a preservative rag this way.

I like to use a Hoppes silicone cloth to wipe my guns after cleaning. It’s kinda sentimental in a way because the cloth hasn’t changed since I was a teenager. The feel and smell of it reminds me of a time before cell phones and computers and the fun I had shooting as a youth.

I use old cloth diapers for guns and tools. Some I gave are 15 years old this year.

Stay safe.

I have been using wd40 on all my guns for over 40 years inside and out. The same guns. I have 9 right now and all but 2 are 40 years or older. My muzzle loader that i clean with soap and water is just a little over 20 years. One thing you will not find on them is rust. There is a lot talk about wd out there but its just not true. Over 40 years of experience has taught me that. Wipe on wipe off excess.
