I am not aware of any good hog hunting near El Paso. But north and east you’ll find some very good hunting. Guthrie, Paducah, Crowell are all good places to start.

We are over run with them right now but quite opposite conditions than El Paso.

On my 300 I use light end for .30 cal bullets don’t have any load data for 147gn FMJ’s but that’s not what you would want to hunt with anyway.

Well FMJ bullets are gonna be a no go for hunting, but the 110 Barnes TTSX gets high marks as does the 125 SST and Nosler Ballistic Tip.

Are you set on the 300 BO? Have you considered 6.8 SPC II or 6.5 Grendel? It might be prudent to do a little homework on the differences between the three mentioned in regards to efficacy on game. Personally, I consider the 300 BO marginal, but others seem to think it is fine for the job.

I think I would take a premium bonded 5.56 in the 70+ grain weight over the 300 BO.

These are just my opinions so take them for what it’s worth but just thought I would at least make you pause for some consideration before splurging on 3 uppers. If you’ve done your research and set on the 300 BO then I would push a lighter tough bullet fast with some H110 or CFE 300 BO

I've used a lot of AR calibers to kill hogs. My least favorite is the .300 BO. I think it's a really efficient pistol round. I think it's great at what it's meant for, using with a suppressor. 7.62x39 is a good round for hogs, but my favorite is the 6.8 spc ll. I know the 6.5 G is all the rage right now, but I prefer 6.8, what the 6.5 can do better is beyond the ranges I usually shoot critters.
You can hunt and kill hogs with a 300BO, I've done it, out as far as 225 yards, but I switched back the 6.8.
If you go with the 300BO contrary to all this sage advice, the 125 grain bullet worked best for me.

I hunt with a 300BLK mainly because I am cheap! I can get used .223/5.56 brass from my nephew and his friends which I convert to 300BLK.
It's adequate as long as you're not shooting long distance. My shots are rarely over 125 yards, virtually never more than 150 yards.
A 6.8SPC or 6.5 Grendel will give you more knock down power. The 300BLK is roughly equal to an AK47 or SKS. If you're shooting in open country, a longer range cartridge may be better suited for your purposes.
That said, I like the 300BLK. It's accurate enough for me at the ranges I'm shooting. I use a 110 grain Hornady SP bullet. The 110 grain Barnes is a good choice, but more expensive.
Did I mention that I am cheap? Well, my wife might argue that I'm really not. I'm using an IR Hunter MK3 60mm thermal weapon sight which isn't exactly the lowest cost option I just cut corners where I think I can get away with it …

Need a bit bigger rifle but if stationed at Ft Bliss, I'd sure check into the White Sands Oryx hunting. http://www.wildlife.state.nm.us/download/publications/rib/2019/hunting/25-Oryx.pdf

As far as an AR for hog hunting, I've culled a lot of hogs to 200 # while hunting coyotes w/.223 AR. Careful shot placement even a 55 gr. NBT is very effective. Do not try full facing shot between the eyes, however as bullet will splash and ricochet off the skull.

Side shot behind ear or between eye and ear extremely effective but I'd avoid the fmj in any caliber.

H&H hunter,
Pigs like to run creek beds and wallow in mud. The only places near El Paso would be in the irrigated areas near the river. The bosque southeast of the city would be ideal. The problem with that is they would never make it across the desert to those places and it would be criminal to transplant them there.

I don’t own a 300BLK because I have no reason to shoot suppressed. My hog hunting walking rifle besides my Marlin Leverguns, is done with an AR in 7.62x39. I would also steer clear of FMJ bullets for hunting given the slow speed of that weight bullet in that cartridge. You would actually be better off hunting with FMJ in 5.56/223 as the bullet would at least be more likely to tumble and cause more damage. But that’s ONLY if I had nothing else and needed to feed my starving family.

I've considered a 7.62x39 upper, but I figure my SKS works well enough. I shoot 154 soft points in it, Monarch/Wolf or whatever Russian brand. The stuff is quite deadly on pigs and it's cheap. It's also more accurate than anything else in the gun, 2.5 MOA which is plenty good 'nuf in the woods around here :D I'm really not all THAT enamored with the AR platform and, well, I have to use this SKS for something.

Killing hogs is better than using he for bookends. Every time we cull from the group we run them off our place for almost a week.
