Is that dent from the bolt? When you had your malfunction, was the bolt past the cartridge base?

Given the value oriented aspect of the firearm, and seriously, no offense intended at all... a little more break in was needed.

That was my first assumption. I just wanted to make sure and not just burn through ammo if there was something I should be doing.

The damaged rounds were almost fully chambered and the bolt was properly "locked" to them, but not fully into battery. I gave a good pull on the charging handle to pull them out. So maybe the dent is from the feed ramp?

I would send it back to smith and wesson. They will take care of you. I had problems when i bought my first ar also. but i found out i was loading 31 rounds and not 30. with a M&P15 milspec with Pmags.

Update...

The Odinworks adjustable buffer finally came in and I have tried it at the low end setting and thus jumping from the original 2.9 oz to 3.7 oz. That was just perfect to balance the overgas. I am now ejecting at 3:00 - 4:30.

The failure to feed continues to improve. The last two outings (second one with the new buffer) had zero failures. I have also gotten all the tools and supplies to reload .223 so my last test included both factory and hand rolled. All were very good. Since I am just starting to load for this it included starting rounds (55&62gr) as slow as 1100 fps over the chronograph. I don't have full chrony results since I forgot the diffusers and it was a blue sky; so I got a good number of "err1", but did get enough valid results to do some more loading and testing.

Again, a big thank you to all. I am glad to have learned what I have about the AR-15 / 5.56.
