How fast can you run your pump shotgun?

Add the Stevens 620 to the list of slam fire capable shotguns. Mine being a 16ga helps keep the muzzle down when you really run it quick but it sure does cost more to do...

My high school accounting teacher was a trap/skeet shooter and only used a pump 12 ga. He won most of the meets I attended against semi-autos and O/U. Asked him how he did it. Said he focused on accuracy and didn't think about speed; pumping was automatic.

I do not have a horse in this race these days, but back in the day i was capable of a pretty fast rate of fire with an old JC Higgins pump That was one slick running and handling pump.

I have timed myself, usually just getting off the first shot from a low ready position. I've also timed myself in practice using poppers or balloons taking four shots, reloading, and taking four more but don't remember the times. More recently, I've used my pump in doubles at the trap club.

This thread makes me think I need to do more three-gun.

I think my 1100, 12 gauge Special Field has a 21" barrel and I'm faster than I should need to be...from two-handed carry position to getting the first shot off in about a quarter of a second. The second shot may not need to be very fast, but it could be faster than the first.

I noticed that you've installed a spare shell holder on your Nova (as I have on mine). But shooters should be made aware that it's possible to distort the synthetic receiver enough to cause the gun to malfunction if you crank down too hard on the attachment bolts.

mine is now and for last 5 years a truck gun , in a under rear seat lock box . It is my most accurate slug gun and is loaded with Brenneke 3" slugs, just in case of dinosaur attacks . It serves all the purpose I may need a shotgun for in my travels around the 3 states of Calif. Oregon and Az. I regular travel in reirement. I carry a box of steel #4 3" shells, a box of 2 3/4 00 buck and a box of lead 7.5 shot with it, besides the rest of a box of slugs. It is reliable and light and with a 3.5" chamber handles anything. I had a machinist help to reduce the LOP on stock and replaced the pad with a Limpsaver , it has a detatchable 300 Lumen Steamlight on the rail I put out front. It is nowhere near as smooth as my fighting 870, mostly because of the looong stroke because it is 3.5" ready I think, that was my complaint when I took it first to a Louis Awerbuck advanced SG course a decade before .

My shooting buddies say I work my BPS as fast as a semi auto.

I couldn't tell you myself how fast it is as I am usually paying attention to the targets.

I tend to think this is pretty typical of folks who have used a pump shotgun for quite a while. My main experience was when I was much younger shooting at multiple rabbits as they fled from a brush pile.
