My girlfriend had never fired a gun before and I took her to the range about 3-4 weeks ago. I let her shoot my M&P and my S&W 642. She says I like it and want to shoot more. Last night was my grass cutting evening at the club, so I had her meet me there and I brought 2 Savage Mark II 22lr with scopes, Savage Axis 223rem and both handguns. She arrives wearing jean shorts, low cut, sleeveless shirt, tan shooting vest, S&W hat, Pink ear muffs and goggles. It was so cute!

I set up 12'' shoot n see at 100yards along with about 20 florescent green 2x2 blocks and clay targets. She was shooting at the shoot n see with everything grouping to the right of the bulls eye so I adjusted the windage and with Remington Thunderbolts she was sending them in the center of the target. I was spotting for her and didn't see anymore hits and when I brought it to her attention she says "shooting the blocks is more fun cause they fly apart". I said what? I look at the blocks and only about 10 are standing. Her dad left behind a lot of ammo and she brought a few bricks of 22lr. I told her I would buy them from her because she doesn't have a 22lr. She turns and smiled and says "yet". Yeah, I think she is hooked.

I had my older Mark II with crap trigger and resting on a sand bag atop an ammo can and said loser buys dinner! Next thing I know she is banging away like Chris Kyle with the Mark II heavy barrel & accu trigger and only one block is left. I missed and she says "here, let me get that for you" and blows the thing apart. The smile on her face was priceless. She walks over to my single case and says what's in here? I replied my woodchuck rifle 223rem. I said, there is a box of 223rem sitting on my tailgate with your name on it. She starts smiling and runs to the tailgate. I show her how to load the magazine and put a 2'' shoot n see at 100yards and adjust the front rest and rear bag and tell her to shoot the little red dot. She is shaking before the first shot and it goes off. She says, "that's not that bad" and chambers another. She is very stubborn and goes at things 100mph. She tossed the rear bag to the side and was all upset she wasn't hitting the shoot n see. I tried helping her and said, you know what, she is having fun who cares if she hits it. Out of 10 shots she hit it 4 times.

Now onto pistol...

About 8 guys showed up wanting to shoot pistol to prepare for the clubs pistol match tomorrow and I told her about 100 times that she needs to be on her A game because there are a lot of people around. Everyone hangs targets and I walk over to the table and there sits the revolver and semi auto loaded. :uhoh::oops::( I told her we don't leave loaded guns laying around and we will all rotate when we shoot, load when ready to shoot. She had a few mistakes like swiping me or walking to the shooting spot with a closed cylinder and unloading it when walking back. I went with her the time she shot the semi automatic just to be sure all was good (only second time firing a semi auto and she had a hot case fall into her low cut shirt. She turned around on me with a live round chambered and I kind of snapped at her :(. It was odd that CCI blazers threw strait up in the air but my handloads ejected like normal. She took another hot piece of brass down the low cut shirt again and stood there and took it. I explained to her nicely that there was a live round and someone could have gotten hurt. No more low cut shirts at the range. She says she wanted to look nice for me. She is pretty accurate with both guns, but has dexterity issues firing the revolver,so doesn't like it that much. Us and another set of shooters called cold range and changed targets. She was marking her holes on the target and I look over and see the other shooter with gun drawn and getting ready to fire. I tried yelling at him, but he didn't hear, so I yelled at her to get back here. I said something to him and he says "I was just dry firing and adjusting my sight". This is why I usually leave when other pistol shooters show up.

We went to dinner and even though she beat me in the block shooting she paid for dinner. I asked if she was mad at me for snapping at her about safe handling and she said no and wants to shoot again and next time she is wearing a sweat shirt. She got 2 pretty good burn marks on her chest. She asked when we can go again and says I am buying guns, but you have to be with me. I told her what is mine is her's. If she wants to shoot it just ask.

Yeah that's not ok.

Those are the best kind of injuries.

"Look at these burns!"
"Uh huh."
"No seriously, look how bad they are!"
"I am. I'm really looking. I'll get some ointment. Hold still."

I tried that once. It worked.

One of our local ranges makes the ladies buy a t-shirt if their top is too low-cut before they let them shoot. Lol.

Yep, my local range does too.

That's why I take girlfriends to the woods to shoot! Seriously though, a quiet environment is easier to learn in, and a new self conscious shooter seems more comfortable. Ranges are loud. I always warn any woman I teach to shoot to wear appropriate attire. They don't always listen though.

I didn't go off too bad because I knew him and his dad. His dad was my boss about 12-13yrs ago and we used to all hunt together. He realized what he did and apologized.

Her plan was show up before me when they started mowing at 4pm and fish. I arrive at 430pm and mow for an hour or two and then we shoot. Usually no one shows up at the range on Tuesday because they know we cut grass for about 2hrs. 5PM-7pm. Only two members showed but brought 3 buddies The first time I took her it was just us. Weekends are a zoo but weeknights rarely anyone is there. I was surprised she wore that shirt. I told her I don't care if she is covered in mud she is still hot. She doesn't need to wear nice clothes especially to my muddy, old geezer filled range.

Having a significant other that shoots is a blessing. It has a downside too: once they become experienced you can't BS them. I once mentioned that I needed a new scope for a rifle and her response was "NO, you need to practice more!". :D

The dry firing of a firearm or even handling of a firearm during a cease fire would be a very serious infraction at my home shooting range. I'm shaking my head over this. I take it this was a public un-monitored shooting range?

Anyway congratulations on a great day shooting and winning another over!

You know you have created a monster don't you? Once she gets the hang of it you will be the poor shot forevermore.:p Now she understands fashion takes a second place to safety. Glad you have found a great shooting partner.
Yeah, I did! She says I want this gun, that gun, etc. We went to a LGS for some powder last week and she was looking while I was reloading shopping. She says I want the same guns you have and I said why? Just shoot mine when we go. She didn't want to keep me from using them and I said Ill just use the revolver and you can shoot the semi auto and we switch. She likes standing on the line together shooting. Well, the kid behind the counter says to me ill just give her my card and she can come back later when your not around and buy whatever she wants. I told her I would support her with whatever she wants to buy so long as its not high dollar or junk. I think Grab a gun still has some M&P 1.0 for cheap so maybe we will go that route. I will take her to an indoor range and rent some so she can see what she really likes. I have 2-22lr I told her one is hers when she wants to shoot. I also have 2-223rem rifles. Ive already been asked if she can go shoot skeet with me and woodchucks. If I don't stop soon I wont have any free time to myself.

No sir! This was at a members only hunt club/private range. I went to hang targets and she says she wanted to do it. I went back to the table and the guy was hanging his. We two seperate 30ft boards to hang targets on. He was at the right hand one and us on the left. Technically he wasn't shooting towards her but she was still in front of him but to the left. I wont even get on the same line with someone. Had it been a stranger and he actually fired there would have been a serious issue. A lot of these "game shooters" like to stand on the line and dry fire or tweak their red dots. I used to be pretty good friends with his dad so I couldn't be too much of a jerk. When I finish shooting I re-holster and walk up to the target and not carrying it in my hand. If I need to mess with the gun I go to the side bench and face away from everyone.

The other thing is they know what you have.....mine knows better what guns I have then I do.

First: Well done!

Second: You didn't show her *all* of your guns, did you? Now she knows!

Third: If this goes so far as marriage arrange a pre-nuptial agreement about whose guns are whose in the event of a break-up.

Fourth: Well done!

Well, good on you! It sounds like you both had a great time. There are some lessons that one has to learn and it sounds like she learned a couple that evening. Using reactive targets is a good idea. Sometimes shooting paper is boring to a non competitive shooter. My Wife loves shooting 6" steel plates at 600 yards with my match rifle but could care less for shooting the benchrest target that I practice with.

Probably wont get married. I am not the marriage type of guy. Long term relationship, yes.

She has only seen the two handguns, 22lr and woodchuck gun. She hasn't seen the 2 shotguns, ML and 2 deer rifles yet.

She shot the shoot n c and it lite up and she says ooooh. She quickly switched to the blocks cause pine blocks blow apart when hit. We cant do steel otherwise I would have a spinner target.

I just spoke with her and she says she has two big blisters. My reply was wear a shirt next time. She replied I did have a shirt on.

It's a serious infraction at my range also, grounds for immediate termination of membership.

I think that I created a monster a couple weeks ago by having a young couple shoot my guns. He's getting her an AR and a 9mm pistol.

Good on you and your girlfriend.

Our range is such a cluster .... it isn't even funny. If I had brought it to anyone's attention they wouldn't care. People don't sign in and leave the gate open and then the last guy to sign in gets blamed. People leaving brass or even shooting benches the last person to sign in gets blamed. I gave up awhile ago on that place. Its cheap, close to home and if a bunch of people are there I just go back home. Its 5miles away so no big deal. I am going to send them an email about the incident because I see way too many guys doing it.

Most people at my range are quite polite and follow rules pertaining to handling firearms during a cold range. There are some who do t understand, some don't care. The young couple from my last range trip, not that it matters, we're likely first or second generation immigrants, likely Serbian. Again that doesn't matter but he had gone forward to check a target, and asked about their pistol, she reached for it, I calmly explained the rules and that it wasn't safe. She understood that. He on the otherhand didn't care and tried to go forward while I was firing. I stopped and said no I had to clear first. Later he went forward while she was shootingy m11 savage. I never saw him do it. I was irritated to say the least but she learned some gun saftey so that is a plus.
